not taking protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I found this forum newly and I see everyone saying they are taking Protein shakes while my surgeun didnt describe it for me , I am not taking any food with Protein , I am 2 weeks post op and only drinking orange juice and other fruit juices , toast and yougart. My surgeun says I should stay like that untill I hit 1 month while everybody here starts with puree in the second week.

I am confused.

Also I lost 7 kilos and the scale stopped dropping for 5 days now but there is physical improvement

The difference in surgeons blows me away. I am 6 wks out an have been on Protein Shakes since 2 wks preop. I'm shocked an don't understand the drinking of Orange juice with sugar an carb count an toast? ? Wow..I would call an dbl chk on this...my protocol is 60 grms of protein daily. ...u will have slow weight loss with this kinda intake...be sure to chk...:)

I had to do 2 weeks of Clear Liquids only (broth, tea, Water, sugar free popsicles, etc) and then 2 weeks of all liquids (this was when I could add in Protein Shakes, skim milk, etc). Then 2 weeks of pureed foods, 2 weeks of soft foods, then 2 weeks of slowly adding in low carb high Protein regular foods as they were tolerated. I really think the solid month of liquids helped my weight loss tremendously. It felt like a detox of all the sugar I had eaten in the past because now, even 4 months out, even some sugar free products taste super sweet. The only juice I could have was 2 oz of no sugar added or diet juice and it still had to be diluted with 2 oz of water. Juice and bread seems too high carb, especially in the beginning. You can also search online for gastric sleeve diet plans and they will give you a more structured plan. Also, go on Amazon and look for the Big Book on Gastric Sleeve. I can't remember the exact title but I think it was written by the guy that started Bariatric Pal. Really good tips in there for a diet plan. As you can see, mine was stricter than some in the beginning, but I really think it made a huge difference in how quickly I lost in the beginning.

The body does not and cannot heal without Protein. As far as the juice is concerned, maybe you have some underlying diabetic issue that he wants you to have sugared juices for but every single sleeve band and bypass diet I have seen steers you away from the empty calories of juice. Water and Protein should be your best friend. Do you have a costco or sam's near you? Premier Protein shakes are relatively inexpensive and pack high Vitamins and protein while not having that chalky chunky taste of most shakes. Good luck with this.

and toast? Maybe he wants you back for a revision or something - bread stretches out your pouch. It is part of the reason we keep weight on. Seek another opinion asap or call your primary care doctor.

All these comments are making me depressed because I feel my doctor is doing something wrong , I called and he confirmed I should stick with what he told me to eat ( toast , greek yogurt and all kind of natural juice )

He did this hundreds of times and did this diet with all his patients and I see positive outcomes from almost everybody I spoke to.

Greek yogurt does have Protein. Does he want you to focus on that?

My surgeon didn't tell me to take Protein Shake neither.

He told me to eat a bit of everything and balance.

I've been sleeved in France.

Protein is essential to your recovery. If you're not getting what you need from your medical team as far as nutritional advice seek out a nutritionist with experience in bariatric patients. I don't know about your area, but around here, they can be consulted in some of the hospitals and most of the grocery stores as well as some who practice privately. Take your after care seriously. Your future health depends on it!

this is my hospital's diet plan. its very specific and will tell you exactly what you need to know. it is a center of excellence. somewhere there is a thread with lots of links to post op diets. but i dont know where.

If you don't mind me asking how far out are you? And are you losing hair? I ask because a non WLS friend of mine believes we lose hair because of the large amount of protein/low carbs many consume after surgery. She said the same happens with people who stay on the Atkins diet for long periods.

I think here in France, the surgeons prefer that the body goes through the process with natural real food which we're supposed to live on in long term.

The most important thing they seem do not want the patients to bear the extra cost for our health issues.

I'll just share this for information, for the weight lost surgeries, the social security bears all the cost of the procedure including pre-op check up and the rest will be borne by the health insurance (which my husband pays 5 euros per month), we just send the invoice of the surgeon to the insurance and only one day they gave us the letter to take charge of all cost,

In case that the insurance cannot cover the total amount of the bill, my surgeon would charge me only the amount that will be paid by the insurance.

When I got out of the hospital I paid the whole amount by cheque to the surgeon but he didn't cash it right away, now he's waiting for me to call his secretary that l I get reimbursed by the insurance, then he will bank in the cheque.

My surgery including my stay 4 nights in the Intensive Care service and 2 nights of recovery room, it costs around 3700 US$ (I got in done in a private hospital, if it's the public hospital it costs around 600 euros or around 800 US dollar and will be borne by the social security).

I only paid around 6 euros out of my pocket for the private room and minus the cost of Protein shake.

I was so glad because I am not the fan of Protein Shake, tried it long time ago and couldn't stand it.

Anyway, I will have to take the blood test in 3 months and if the result shows that my body needs more Protein, maybe he would encourage me to take it.

So far he only encouraged me to take a cereals bar with Vitamin B6, B9, Selenium and zinc for snack nothing else.

I got it done on 7 July, so I'm only 6 weeks out, my hair is not falling out yet and my surgeon didn't seem concerned. When I told him that I'm afraid of losing hair, he just told me to est a cereals bar which contains Vitamins everyday for snack, again, if it happens in the future, I'm sure he will have to give me the solution for it.

With all due respect I agree with you all that Protein is important, I also add protein to each meals but I get it from meat & vegetables, I just don't do the shake, that's all.

I think it is enlightening to see how different cultures have such different relationships to food! I would love to develop a more French and Mediterranean attitude toward nutrition. It is cool to hear everyone's experience.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
