Getting sleeved tomorrow, so many mixed emotions and fear

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm new to the site! My name is Adam, I'm 21 years old and getting surgery tomorrow. I started all my appointments are prep for the surgery in June at 319 pounds, and as of now I'm 295. I am second guessing my decision. I know it's last minute nerves, but after seeing how I lost weight by just exercising more and cutting all junk food and quantity of meals, I was wondering if I can do this on my own. However, I know that in 4 months I might crack and not be able to... the sleeve is the tool I need. I am not really nervous about giving up the relationship with food, because after losing weight and being more healthy and confident i can have the will power to start NEW relationships with people and not bad habits such as over eating. I'm just a nervous wreck about everything else. I'm paranoid of leaks, which my bariatric dept. at the hospital I'm going to has not ever had one leak (lets hope I'm not the 1st...). I'm also scared of excess saggy skin, but my nutritionist and dr tried telling me since I'm younger I won't have as much if I continue to work out regularly. I know there are so many success stories, and I'm ready for mine. I know I can live with the diet because If I can do it all summer with out the surgery, I'll be able to do it after with the surgery. I just need some words of wisdom =/

I'm not having my VSG tomorrow however, I second your quote minus that part! I had the opportunity to get RNY about 9 years ago when I was 30 but chickened out because of all the side effects and the "open" bypass that was being done at the time, the band 4 years ago but didn't want anything foreign in my body and the effects that my aunt has suffered who's now considering revision to VSG after 4 years. I've researched the "sleeve" for about 8 months and now I'm waiting on approval and a date. Congratulations on your surgery tomorrow and may you have a speedy recovery and the health and weight that you deserve :)

Good luck Adam!! It's really normal to second guess yourself and have fears etc... I think most of us went through that.

I had my VSG surgery less then 4 months ago and I am down almost 70lbs (just average says my surgeon :( ) and I am SO SO thrilled. Its still going to be damn hard to keep off forever even with the surgery but wow! If you could get this under control in your 20's really amazing. Sending best wishes and prayers your way. Its going to be great!!

Good luck Adam, I will be having my sleeve next week. Originally I was scheduled in November 2013 and I backed out but know wish I had went through with it. So I am taking my second chance.

Adam you are going to do great. I have not had my surgery yet but I think it is a natural feeling to second guess your decision..and to be paranoid about possible complications. I think it's awesome that the hospital you are going through has had no leaks. Trust me you will be fine. Everybody who has been heavy and lost a large amount of weight has had saggy skin. As long as you stay in the weights and work hard at it, it shouldn't be as bad. But good luck to you and I can't wait to hear your success story :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
