Not to worry! Just be calm and answer truthfully! ;)

For the most part its just a step the insurance requires. But it is to see if you have unrealistic expectations, or very obvious eating disorder. But its pretty hard to diagnose anything with one short session with a psychologist.

IMO there really should be a little more emphases on the mental state of people before WLS is approved. Its pretty obvious from some of the posts on this board that some people need a little counseling to assist them with them with their weight problems.

Many people have to fill out a rather lengthy questionnaire. I did not have to fill one out, I just spoke with the therapist at the bariatric center for about an hour.

They want to establish that you have rational expectations for the surgery and that you understand what the surgery will and will not impact your life.

Some of the indicators they're looking for:

  • What are the main reasons you're doing this surgery?
  • Are you doing this surgery for yourself or someone else (like a spouse)?
  • Do you understand that the surgery is just a tool and that you will have to change your lifestyle for long-term success?
  • Do you have a support system?
  • What do you plan to do for exercise?
  • What will you do with your free time in which you used to eat?
  • Do you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed as anorexic or bulemic?
  • History of physical or sexual abuse?
  • What are your eating triggers and how do you plan to deal with them?

These were some of the discussion points and they were all excellent points. Don't try to guess "right" or "wrong" answers, just be honest. The therapist is there to help you succeed, not hinder your success.

My experience was similar to AlwaysVegas, There was an interview with the psychologist in which she asked me nearly those same questions, and she typed my responses into the computer.I think that it helps fill in the gaps so that they are not doing such a life-changing surgery on a complete stranger. The interview helps them to get to know you so that they can help you be successful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
