Cruise trip 8 weeks post op - good idea or bad?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of scheduling a sleeve operation about 8 weeks before an already planned Caribbean cruise trip which is a week long. Is that too soon post op to do? Where would I be in terms of post op diet (ie still on purees?) cruises are already a pig out frenzy so I wonder if I would get derailed completely. Maybe I should wait until after the cruise? Thoughts?

I went on a cruise 11 weeks out. I was able to enjoy myself without the food hangover guilt because of restriction. I couldn't eat raw veggies/fruit, rice, steak. But, there was still plenty to choose from. I still lost 3lbs that week!

8 weeks out you should be on purees and soft foods right?.I'm assuming there will be food there that you can't eat but I'm sure there are also other foods that are soft and tolerable. I have friends who have gone on cruises after surgery and they have told me that there was no urge to eat because of their stomach restrictions and also because they were scared of "dumping syndrome"...I think you should be fine unless you are still in pain post surgery I would reconsider.

I'm almost 4 weeks out, and I could go on a cruise. The only thing I'd be careful about would be lifting my luggage, as I'm not supposed to lift more than 15 lbs. But I can eat soft stuff and purees, and honestly I've stopped pureeing all my Soups, I just pick ones with soft meats and veggies and chew the heck out of them. Like, 2-3 minutes per bite. So I'd think by 8 weeks, you'd be okay, but I know not everybody bounces back at the same rate.

  • I went on a caribean cruise at 6 weeks out! I had a blast! The waiters all thought I didnt like the food because I could only eat a little but it was all soo good. My advice is to make sure you take a Water bottle to get all of your Water in and eat the Protein foods first. You will have fun. I actually lost 3 pounds!

I was on a regular diet by 8 weeks out. I would totally have gone on a cruise. I will say I had a decidedly easy recovery and no side effects.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
