Hello everyone! I just wanted to know if anyone else had the experience I'm having and looking for advice. I had my lap band removed, a huge hiatal hernia repair, and was sleeved on 8/5/14. Today at a week and a half out I feel horrible. I'm weak, still in pain, can't find a Protein Shake that likes me, and exhausted. My nutritionist advanced me to "soft" foods on Tuesday this week. But now that I've left the puréed food stage it seems like nothing agrees with me now. Might need to go back to the ER...any input is welcome.

I had practically the same surgery a year ago. I felt terribly sick in the beginning and thought that I was going to die on a couple if occasions. Don't despair. Let the sleeve show you what it needs. Be kind and patient with the process. I think that for the first couple of weeks I could only have Popsicles. I couldn't do the Protein Shakes. Don't force anything drink plenty of Water and get good sleep. All of that helped tremendously.

Thank you for your positive encouragement! Wow see my surgeon has advanced me to soft foods already and I think I'm not tolerating them. I never had a real clear liquid diet other than in the hospital for the first two day post op. How long did you feel cruddy???

It actually went on for a couple of weeks. I was trying to rush myself into the next phases. Remember, doctors are not taking into account your personal experiences, they are just making generalizations about what they think you should be doing. Because you went from the band to the sleeve and had the hernia removed (and possibly had a damaged esophagus like me), you shouldn't pressure yourself to fit in the mold of the virgin sleever. I know that my situation is perhaps a little more fragile. You don't need anything ripping apart your throat or stomach. Stay liquid until your stomach tells you it can handle more.

I had the sleeve surgery on 7/18/14. For the first 10 days I was allowed 4 ounces of Water or clear broth per hour. I could also have Jello and popsicles, but couldn't handle either. My docter was pretty strict. On the eleventh day I moved to full liquids and on the 14th day to pureed. I have to do a month of pureed. I'm happy with that because I honestly don't feel my tummy is ready for the next stage. Get your Protein from your shakes and drink fluids to stay hydrated. Stay in the the different stages as long as you have to and by all means seek medical care if your body is telling you to. I send good wishes to you for a speedy recovery.

Thank you for your input you all! I think I'm going to back track a little and go back to the liquids and puréed diet. This is a new feeling, and maybe it's my body/stomach telling me it's not ready just like what ur saying. I am going to go find some different Protein Drinks today and experiment more. I know that Protein is CRUCIAL!

Palomarules since we had practically the same surgery I have a direct question for you. Did you experience more pain than expected? I'm going to call the doctors office today and tell them about my continued pain (unrelieved by just plain Tylenol) and see what they say. I just don't want to come off like I'm drug seeking because that's not the case.

I had the hiatal hernia repair at the same time too. I think the excess swelling just makes it harder because I too struggled tremendously. Only thing I could get down was sugar free Popsicles. I lived on them because even Water and Protein shakes were a no-no. Finally, as the swelling began to subside I could get more things in (about 2 1/2 weeks out): Jello, Greek yogurt, a couple of spoonfuls of cream of chicken (strained). About a month out I discovered the RTD (ready to drink) Premier Protein chocolate shakes. They weren't chalky and they didn't initiate my gag reflex.

I really hope you feel better sooner rather than later. I'm sorry you're going through this, but it will pass! I wish you the best of success. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Before you know it, your slow walk will become a run!

Protein is CRUCIAL!

@@Nychkole2

the above is very true :)

all of us WLS have that engraved in our minds

(i might have that put on my tomb stone!!! :D) - not yet though

liquids/water are more important than protein at your early stage

if you temporarily are having trouble keeping shakes et al down........... push other fluids/water

don't get dehydrated

many of us have experienced that (me too  )

fluids/water/popsicles are great for now if you are having other problems <_<

10 days PO - you have alot of company with others in the same boat as you are (please don't sink :D )

being tired - finding a good shake for you, not feeling good in general - common for many

hopefully these things will pass sooner than later :)

you are on the right tract for a great new life :)

lets give your recovery a kick in the asssss :o ;)

good luck :)

kathy

I had my sleeve 8/5 and I have no energy at all. Headaches sometimes . Upset stomach frequently. I'm still on liquids til the 20th and there's so much I can't even stand the thought of drinking...feels like my stomach puckers at the thought of some things. Makes no sense I know...it's frustrating but I know it won't always be like this.

I had mine on 8/5 too! And this no energy and upset stomach is really getting to me!!!! The crazy thing to me is that it seems like everybody stayed on the liquid diet so much longer than I did. I'm at the soft foods stage now. While the solid foods are ok, I'm having so much trouble with these Protein Shakes right now. I bought a different brand today without any lactose/gluten/ANYTHING....and I have the worse upset stomach ever! Every day it's the same cycle and I can't wait to feel better. I hate complaining and feeling frustrated like this.

My program has me on liquids for the first two weeks (8/6 sleeve) with hydration and Protein as top priorities before going to puréed foods for another two weeks and then soft foods. If something isn't agreeing with you, go backwards to the liquid stage and start again until you talk to your doc. Everyone has a different experience and sometimes some of us need to go slower than others. For protein, i have had mix it up due to growing tired of a certain taste. I like to take Greek yogurt, thin it with Water and add a little Crystal Light lemonade mix. By thinning it down, I can tolerate more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
