Worried - too much fluid 3 days post op ?!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm a bit concerned that I can drink too much Fluid. I'm on my third day post surgery and I can easily drink 500mls in one go without any discomfort. Is this too much ?? Is this a sign that my new stomach is too big or something ?

Are you still in the hospital? I would ask my surgeon if this is too much. That sounds like quite a bit. Are you able to drink that much gulping fluids down or just over one sitting?

Maybe a quick call in the morning just to make sure! I don't have a lot of advice for you as I'm only 10 days post op. But I wish I could get my fluids in like you! It's not that it's difficult for me getting them down, I think I could definitely drink more. It's just actually doing it that's difficult.

Thanks I've just sent my surgeon an email he's pretty good a replying fairly quickly.

It's weird, like I'm glad I have no trouble keeping hydrated but am worried that if I can get this much Fluid down so easily so early on, I may be able to get a lot of food down which I just don't want :-(

You will never get full on liquids. They go right through your sleeve like it's not there. (I know this because I've done a barium swallow on myself both pre and postop and had a flouroscopy and literally saw it go right through) Be grateful you can stay hydrated. I needed IV fluids for dehydration 3 times and that sucks. Just keep drinking!

Thanks Kindle, so I won't stretch my new stomach with too much Fluid ?

Thanks all my surgeon got back to me he said it's fine, for some people liquids go through really well almost from day 1. He said it won't stretch the sleeve it'll go straight through. He said game will change when I start proper food. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
