I am 5 weeks out from Gastric Bypass Surgery and I would like to know if what I am going thru is typical or not. While my weight has fallen off with no problem, I am having issues with getting more than 400/500 calories per day and getting over 4o grams of Protein. My taste buds are shot and I cannot seem to eat very much except things like pudding, Jello, and little Soup. chicken taste horrible , eggs once my favorite are no longer appealing to me. But i am able to keep refried Beans down OK. I am not having any issues with food coming back up, but I do experience a heavy rock feeling in my gut after eating. Has anybody experienced the same or similar? How long can I expect this to last?. My first visit with my nutritionist is still 2 weeks away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am sorry I don't have any suggestions for you but I am going through the exact same thing. Even Water tastes funny. My Protein shakes make me want to hurl. It is just bad. I try to get Greek yogurt down and that is bad to me now. The best thing I have found for myself is cottage cheese but who can live off of that?

Pik I feel the same way.

It is just awful, isn't it? My surgeon has me drinking sf gatorade right now, just so that I can try to get the fluids in at least. He is not overly concerned with the Proteins right this minute.

I am still dropping a lb a day but I am also quite sure I am not getting in the calories I need to get in because I have been super nauseous since surgery.

5 weeks out and feel exactly the same way! Seeing the Dr tomorrow for follow up and will discuss these issues with him. I'll let you know if he says anything earth shattering about it.

I am 4 wks out and getting about 50g of Protein and plenty of fluids but only 400-450 calories per day. NUT doesn't want any more calories. I have no hunger and literally set an alarm to get in the 5 meals/snacks per day. NUT says 8 wks out and I'll progress to 800 calories per day. I'm glad I still have my taste buds though....just have no interest in food.

My taste buds have no desire to eat. I don't like half of the stuff I used to eat. A lot of times I'm eating just for the Protein. Plus I eat on schedule now or I will forget to eat.

Thank you all for your imput and info. From everyone I have talked with its pretty much the same for everyone. . No one can tell me when it will change, and get better. All I ha that it will. I hope so. Today I went to a birthday party and a lot of different foods were being made and served. After 1 hour I had to leave because I was getting sick with the smells and I just made it home before I lost everyting. This stage of my post surgery sucks! But I know it will get better at some point. We just have to hang tough

I have no desire to eat either. I get excited about making something good and end up eating a bite or two. Then I give the rest to my husband. As for taste. Nothing excites me anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
