sleeve doesn't mind sugar- oy!

Recommended Posts

I was under the impression that intolerance for sugar was very common for sleeve patients. I've been having a really stressful week and I slipped into old bad habits and turned to junky sugary foods- first a caramel, then (the next day) a cookie, and then (today) a peppermint patty- and my sleeve didn't mind one bit! To be honest, this scared me quite a bit. I guess avoiding sugar is going to be about sheer willpower. Anyone else have this issue?

Yep - sugar has been a huge part of my weight/food problem, and I hoped that I'd be one of those who got sick from sugar, but initial evidence suggests that that is not the case. I've barely had any sugar though since surgery - just a few small tastes. What has made me happy though is that I've been able to have a tiny taste without feeling an overwhelming urge to eat more. And I don't physically crave sugar like I used to at all. It's just a head thing and while will power was not something that helped me pre-surgery, it does work now.

I feel more like a normal person now - everyone has moments of wanting a sweet, and those who manage their weight more often choose not to. That's how I feel now - like I'm choosing not to eat sweets - but that choice is actually doable now, whereas before surgery the need was too overwhelming and I couldn't so easily choose to make the right decision.

Hope you can find some otherways to calm your nerves so you can avoid getting back into a sugar habit.

It sounds like the quantities of sugar you are consuming fall under that sweet 16 guideline. Most nutritionists say that anything over 16mgs of sugar per serving starts to push people into dumping territory. Just be mindful and treat yourself on occasion only .

My sleeve can tolerate anything. Sadly. It's all about willpower now - some days I am more successful than others.

I have zero issues with sugar. I could eat three or four (or more if there were room) Cookies and not have one bit of an issue.

As part of my pre-op work I spent time breaking myself of my sugar addiction, so I don't need it like before. I used to jokingly say that if I died in a vat of sugar I'd be okay with it. And honestly before the break up, I probably would have been a little bit okay with death by vat o sugar. But is all about the mental game and finding other outlets for my stress. At home I just don't have any of the treats around anymore. Work is more of a minefield, but I try my best to contain my stress and let it out when I go to the gym.

I love the death by vat-of-sugar fantasy! I think I've been there too. My job is a ridiculous mine field. For the summer we have a freezer case in the kitchen filled with ice cream bars for the taking. good humor, snickers, twix ice cream bars, ben and jerries cups, and more - it's just crazy. I had a bunch last summer but this summer I haven't had a single one. I can't help but look every time I go in though, just to see the day's assortment.

But again, it's not as hard now as it used to be.

My sleeve can handle sugar as well. Although I don't have large amounts at once. Small amounts just slide right on down. The only thing that helps is that I don't crave it anymore.

Yes sadly I am not affected by sugar either and I've had different quantities etc and zero effect/sickness.. I had really hoped that I would get 'dumping' as sugar is my evil vice. I avoid sugar like the plague for obvious reasons, do not keep it in the house and sugar free hard candies have become my friend :) I didn't go through the expense and work of my sleeve to ruin it over some candy. :)

Because there is no alteration to your intestinal tract as in the gastric bypass, people who have sleeve surgery do not commonly have dumping. There is a very good book written by Dr. Nick Nicholson "Weight Loss Surgery, the Real Skinny" that does a great job explaining the different surgeries and what each entails. I just heard about it yesterday and downloaded it from Kindle. And yes, the author happens to have been my surgeon- coincidence!

My surgeon told me that since I had the sleeve and not the bypass, I will not get the dumping syndrome. For that I am thankful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
