Worried I messed up... Hopeful I don't have a leak

Recommended Posts

1 week post op. Tonight, I was mowing (rider b/c of big lawn) and before I could get mower put away, it ran out of gas. I didn't even think about it and just pushed it forward about 5 ft in the garage. Right after I did this, I realized what I had done. I didn't strain at all, but, after I thought about it, I'm sure it was way more than 20 lbs of pressure I was told I couldn't lift. After I walked out of the garage, I felt a weird little tingle down my left leg and arm. Fortunately, I haven't noticed anything else un-normal since then.

I hope I'm just being nervous as I haven't felt pain or anything (wasn't painful when I moved mower either). But, I've just heard all these leak horror stories and I really hope I don't have to go through it.

My 2 week follow up is Friday. Is there anything else I should be watching out for before then? Has anyone else had complications because they lifted or exerted too much weight? Ughhh I hope I didn't mess this up!

I think the lifting restriction has more to do with your incisions than the staples in your stomach. For the incisions, they have to cut through your abdominal muscle, so any lifting or straining can cause the muscle to tear or slow its healing.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
