Having MGB in Sept, need your experience

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am having my lapband removed, had lost 30 lbs but gained it back, The lapband really never worked, I lost most of the weight through starving my self and drinking shakes.< /p>

I have done a lot of research and the mgb seems like the best approach since it is reversible, which is very important to me and has great results with the least complication rates.

If you had the mini gastric bypass, what was your experience after surgery? got sick? recovery length?

how long after the surgery where you able to go to work?

how much can you consume (portion size) 3 month,6 month and 1-2 years post op.?

Are there any foods you can't eat?

Did you lose more weight then you intended or resulted in under weight?

what is your height, start weigh and end weight?

Your responses will be appreciated.

Thanks

Surgery went well thanks... But developed pneumonia afterwards, so was in the hospital for a week and a half and now have been home for a week with a picc line in and nurses coming out daily to administer IV antibiotics. Hopefully the picc line comes out tomorrow.

Had planned on being back at work today but just not ready yet so taking another few days off.

Have done 2 weeks liquids and now onto purees but really don't have that much interest in food. Have lost 6 kilos in 2.5 weeks and feeling positive!

Hi Everyone,

I had the surgery on 9/22/2014 and in 3 week have lost 10 kgs or 22 lbs. I was a lapband revision, so I did have some complications since the lapband had done alot of damage. The lapband had caused infections which healed and it would reoccur and my stomach, intestine was stuck to the lapband. I had gone to 2 different bariatric doctors and my primary, but I never had a clue, even after once my blood tests showed there was a infection in my body. my primary and I overlooked it, and I said i might have had a cold or something. I guess this was one of those things where it would be only noticed once I was on the operating table.

So, the surgery took 3 hours instead of the 35 minutes and I was in the hospital for 4 nights, 5 days. The MGB went well except for the lapband removal, the doctor put me on 10 day clear liquid diet, which wasn't hard to do and then I moved on to semi solid/soft foods.

There were 3 other people who had the surgery the same day and they were released the next day and were doingsemi solid after the 4 or 5th day.

So on the 10th day, I tried rice and lentil's in the soft meal category and had no problem eating it. I did have some Soup with chicken bits, or soft chicken and I chewed it up well, the problem I would get sometimes is that it gets stuck, feels like i have a lapband and there is minor pain. The surgeon told me 2 stay on soft foods for another 2 weeks since the lapband and scar tissue still needs to heal.

How is everyone doing with the swallowing? feel any pain in the esophagus when eating?

hopefully it's just the scar tissue healing, I would love to hear from all of you.

I had my MIni Gastric Bypass in Tijuana at the INT Hospital with dr. Ponce de leon on Apr 23rd. I weighed 320 lbs and have lost 126 lbs in the past 8 months. I now run 6 miles every other day, am no longer diabetic, nor have high BP, Cholestrol, GERD, or sleep apnea.

I had only one minor issue and that was a week after I got back to Canada.

One of my centre incisions became infected, or rather a couple of deep stitches did, and it required me to see my doctor daily for six weeks so he could repack wound.

The infection had gone deep and I now have a small hernia below that incision. It doesn't hurt and pops in and out but causes no problem. I'll probably get it tended to when I get a Tummy Tuck.

The MGB is free in Canada but in my province of Saskatchewan the waiting list is 5 years. At 57 years of age I didn't have 5 years to wait so I paid the $12,000 Canadian myself for the flight and surgery. It was the best gift I've ever given myself.

INT is the cleanest hospital I've ever been in anywhere and the staff, nurses, and doctors were top notch. ponce de leon has been doing these surgeries for 18 yrs and knows what he's doing. They had a car waiting at the San Diego airport for me and drive me across the border to INT and then back four days later. post-217717-14208698732432_thumb.jpg post-217717-14208698882875_thumb.jpg post-217717-1420869903343_thumb.jpg

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
