alyce 61 Posted August 10, 2014 I Have had anxiety my entire adult life. Some days I have nothing... Other days are bad. I use Lorazapan as needed. Here is my question ... To anyone who has already been sleeved and has anxiety can I expect it to be worse post op.... In other words even though everything I have read and I know exactly what to expect I am concerned that my anxiety will sky rocket. I just want to be prepared. I was told by my surgeon if need be I can take my Lorazapan...but that scares me too!!! Lol any feedback would be wonderful.
jtickle 295 Posted August 10, 2014 I have an anxiety disorder. I have had a gastric bypass though, but I doubt there is any difference in anxiety levels after either surgery. I take 2 valium a day for my anxiety. I haven't had an anxiety attack or anything like that since surgery. Taking my first bite of food was a little nerve racking but that was it. 1 alyce reacted to this
moonlitestarbrite 902 Posted August 10, 2014 anxiety can be worse after surgery if you have no other self soothing skills than eating. suddenly, you are required to cope without your biggest coping skill. some of us dont realize the depth to which we self medicated with food until after we cant. learning new ways to cope with anxiety and self soothe without food before surgery is an awesome idea. that way you have time to practice before hand. 1 RJ'S/beginning reacted to this
RJ'S/beginning 5,358 Posted August 10, 2014 I suffer from depression and anxiety. I had hoped like I have for years that maybe the surgery would lesson it. I do feel differently but I still have bouts of both and it did not lighten up in the least. And like @@moonlitestarbrite retraining your use of food for comfort will be hard. But you can do it I promise!
shahada 82 Posted August 10, 2014 I agree with moonlitestarbrite. I didn't really have other coping skills post op ( even though I'm in daily medication and in therapy) and my anxiety post op has been difficult. I unfortunately find I am still using food to self soothe, just in obviously teeny amounts I didn't have any anxiety attacks post op, but suffered from serious self doubt (still do) and daily stress about eating and exercise choices. I wish you the best and hope you can find other coping mechanisms pre surgery to help you manage post op life better!! Good luck
