can we never smoke?

Recommended Posts

Before the setting the date of surgery, my surgeon admitted me 48 hours in the hospital to check-up with everything, He needs all consents from cardiologist, lung specialist doctor, psychiatrist for the operation, biopsy and also scan the organs in the abdomen that it will be safe.

I think it depends on the condition of each patient. I didn't need to go on the diet pre-op to shrink the liver nor stop smoking before the surgery, but I met another patient of my surgeon during the check-up she said the doctor asked her to stop smoking 1 day pre-op.

Also on the 4th day post-op when I went to do the scan for the swallow test if there's any leak, actually they scanned the whole abdomen and had the report of each organs (even my uterus) if everything is in the good condition and also sent the report of the surgery to my general practitioner.

I want to share the information here that each country has different practice and procedure, I think in France the doctors give special concerns on the psychological condition of the patients. When I had the problem with hypertension my doctor told me to try to lose weight first and I may continue smoking (I'm not a heaver smoker though) because he was afraid that I would be too stressful, the same with my surgeon.

Smoking is also like the food addiction, before the WLS, I don't think that any of us would be able to stop it neither, non-smokers (good for you, btw) wouldn't understand just like people who never had weight problem never really get the idea of WLS or being obese.

I'm not encouraging anyone to start smoking again, post-op, it's best that you quit, I will probably quit one day too. I just answered the question here, that's all.

My surgeon would not operate until I quit. Haven't had a cigarette since December 13th. Quit cold turkey. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. But I haven't had a cig since. I want one every day but I agree with making a change. Won't go back. Good luck to you.

Can I just say I hate it when people ask a fucking question and then act like people are being judgmental when they answer it??

Smoke your cigarettes to your little hearts content. Enjoy your higher chance of cancer, heart disease, ulcers, COPD...

It's a good thing you had weight loss surgery to become healthier, at least!

And a doctor with a "non judgemental" answer about smoking?? Good luck with that. I smoked for 25 years, and EVERYTHING that ailed me was blamed on smoking by my doctors. They don't judge smokers, they just present facts according to science and research. If you want to call that judgemental, so be it.

And if you've got a doctor who doesn't encourage you to quit, well I'm afraid they aren't doing a very good job of being a doctor.

So just stop asking the question in a public forum where you're afraid of being judged when you already know what the damn answer is.

Jeez.

Wow... Some anger here on this topic... It is amazing how mad people get over other people's choices. I don't smoke but I certainly am not going to be rude to anyone especially since I have a food addiction just like everyone else here. Wouldn't that make me a hypocrit?

FTR, everyone here doesn't have a food addiction.

Not judging.

Just reporting.

Marijuana makes me hungry so that is a huge reason I wouldn't do it again. I think op was referring to electronic cigs.

Well I would assume that anyone who needed wls had some sort of food addiction or they wouldn't have needed surgery-right? Unless they're immobile due to a handicapped or something I can't imagine that obesity came from anything other than a FOOD addiction... Not judging just saying

Oops handicap not handicapped

Yeah, no.

I hope you will find the discussion of obesity and its causes at this link educational:

I was sleeved May 2014. My surgeon required I quit smoking or he would not do the surgery. He tested my blood to ensure there was no nicotine present. I quit smoking December 2013 and haven't picked up a cigarette since. Besides the surgery, best decision I made.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
