Protein Shake and Calcium Supplement, I need a new one!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here and it's been about 3 weeks since I've had the surgery. Progress has been great so far, My excercise is up to 2 mile walks daily, I am on the pureed food phase, and at this point I am having 2 issues. The shakes I was drinking (Premier Protien- chocolate and vanilla, don't like strawberry) were great for the pre-surgery diet and for the start of the liquid phase, but at this point, they are starting to get really nasty to me, and I need some alternatives. If it's powders you'll be recommending, I'd be mixing them with unsweetened coconut milk. Also, the Calcium supplement I have been taking is a monster-sized pill, and has been making me nauseous, and today it made me vomit, so I'd like to try something else- are the chews or gummies okay? I'm trying to make sure I stick to avoiding excess sugar per the nutritionist. Any help would be appreciated.

be careful with the gummies. The ones I started using post op contained 30 calories each which I quickly replaced when I noticed the calorie content. I then went to Wellesse brand, which was a liquid with an orange cream flavor. I liked them but then the store stopped carrying the brand so I switched to generic tablets.

The Protein shakes is a tough one. I actually started with the powdered mixes from Walmart and GNC but when I discovered premier I have stuck with them ever since. Due to the convenience and high Protein content. Its going to be a hit or miss process to see which ones your individual taste prefers.

I tKe citrical petites, recommended. by my nut. They're not hard to get down. I pretty much despise all Protein powders except chime, and that's high in caffeine as well as expensive. I a. Managing to get my protein from food, thank goodness.

Thanks! Since the powder you recommended is odorless and tasteless, I think I may try that, and that way I can mix it in with stuff I love and hit my Protein number that way! On my way to Amazon!

I use the Wellesse liquid Calcium - I buy it from Amazon. If you end up using gummies or chewables just make sure they are calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. And beware -- the "Citrical" calcium brand products are often actually carbonate despite the name, so read labels carefully!

As for Protein powders, I would recommend getting some samples to see what you like. Everyone has different tastes. My favorites are probably Chike, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard, Syntrax Matrix, and Unjury (their chocolate splendor flavor is awesome). Here is a link to another post I did with places to get samples:

Good luck!

hi kia! first of all, welcome and CONGRATS! :)

i'm almost 7 weeks out and these are the Protein drinks i've been using: Isopure black tea lemon flavor (40g of Protein, 1 carb, zero sugar), it's a 20oz bottle and it's the only Isopure flavor i can tolerate. it's sorta like a diet snapple flavor. for me it's quite tolerable as long as it's super cold. sometimes i pour it over crushed ice and squeeze some fresh lemon juice in it. when i'm at work, i tend to dilute it with Water and then i'm killing two birds with one stone. i just like that it has a ton of protein and is easy on my sleeve. the other is in powder form, Gold Standard 100% whey Protein. they have several flavor options, you'll just have to see which ones you prefer. i like the chocolate or the strawberry banana. i use 1 cup of unsweetened coconut milk, 1 cup of Water and 2 scoops of the powder (48g of protein, 5 carbs, 4 sugars).

i stick to about 20-25 carbs and less than 10 sugars total per day because carbs have always been a problem. i tried the gummies because i couldn't stand the chalkiness of those chewables, but the gummies have additional sugars that i didn't want to add so i switched back to the chewables. it will get a little easier to tolerate them, at least it did for me. i have a follow up next friday and i will be asking my doc if i can go back to pill form for all supplements. i take omeprazole, Vitamin A, Vitamin D and feverfew supplements as pills, so i assume i can do the Calcium and Multivitamin like that as well.

good luck!

TEXASLADY52. Thank you so much for the tip on the Protein Powder. It's becoming harder and harder to choke down Protein Shakes. Having something odorless and tasteless would be amazing!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
