VSGLiz 5 Posted August 7, 2014 I asked a nurse at the surgeon's office over the phone if I should take out my Nuvaring, and she told me yes just because birth control causes higher chances of blood clots. Then I called my prescribing doctor, as directed by the office, and he said not to worry about it since I will be up and moving right away and I don't want to be on my period during surgery not knowing what my body will do after going off of birth control. What was your experience with this?
mentalistfan 189 Posted August 7, 2014 I would take it out because my surgeon recommended it too, no birth control. Also, you need to do something else for birth control because it's also dangerous to get pregnant right after surgery.
mrslb5 333 Posted August 7, 2014 She's right I took mine out as soon as I got home from the hospital and didn't put it back in for about 4 weeks I wanted to make sure there was no blood clots.
VSGLiz 5 Posted August 7, 2014 Also, you need to do something else for birth control because it's also dangerous to get pregnant right after surgery. I'm not having sex for quite a while, so it's ok. Single lady here! I just use it to make life easier.

So you didn't take it out until AFTER your surgery? I was instructed to do it a month before.
stephh 634 Posted August 8, 2014 The dietician I see said I will not have to take mine out. I'm going to ask my OB just to make sure though. I would say if you're nervous, treat it like all other birth control and quit using it a month before and put it back in a month after.

I was instructed to do it a month before. yes because my cycle came as soon as I took it out didn't want that along with surgery but you do what you feel will be best for you it worked well for me that way. BitterSweet* 835 Posted August 8, 2014 Follow your surgeon's instructions. The guidelines they have in place are for a reason and it is to minimize complications that are known to occur. Birth control (ALL forms) carry the risk of blood clots. Introduce another risk factor such as surgery and the risks increase substantially. Best wishes to you and good luck on your surgery. QueenA 122 Posted August 8, 2014 (edited) Take it out is what I highly recommend. I had minor surgery a few years ago and the dr didn't recommend I take it out and I ended up with a blood clot. It's just safer to have it out. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck with your surgery. Edited August 8, 2014 by QueenA
Jersrose43 837 Posted August 10, 2014 My surgeon told me no birth control for one month prior. I am on nuva ring Then I could put it in one month after. I did not get my period during surgery because I took it out 3 months prior actually and then put it in 3 weeks ago. Took my body a bit to get used to it again and I had breakthrough bleeding for two weeks but back on course now.
Skittles00 12 Posted August 10, 2014 I took mine out a week before surgery. Then about 3weeks after I finally put it back in. They told me a week after surgery I could put it back but I wasn't in desperate need of it
newme1 2 Posted August 14, 2014 i did not take mine out. my dr's never said anything about it - so i thought they only meant oral bc. i didn't have any problems. surgery was 7/9.
