Has anyone gotten Hypoglycemia from having Bypass surgery and if so how do you control it food wise?

Recommended Posts

I have developed Hypoglycemia after bypass surgery and I've been controlling it as best I can with some more carbs, Protein and a little sugar if my blood sugar drops to low.

This was recommended to me by my primary doctor.

I would like to know if anyone else has this problem and what you do to control it.

I do. I basically do the same thing. I keep Snacks in my desk drawer at work. I try to keep something in my purse if I'm going out but I'm not that great at remembering. Usually I'll buy a drink or a little snack if it's needed. My problem is If it gets too low and my head gets foggy, I'll go into a store and buy a ton of snacky things. Then I'll get my sugar up, and I have to figure out what to do with all the stuff I bought lol

I've come to recognize the feeling I get when it's starting to get low so I can usually catch it before it gets too bad.

I have too. ( Reactive Hypoglycemia )

But it was after the sleeve. And only a few months ago! I eat 6 times a day and very little refined sugar.

I eat complex Protein. That means a carb with a Protein and it seems to be working better for me...... :)

I've had 2 bouts with reactive hypoglycemia. One was from waiting too long to eat dinner and one was from having a Migraine and not eating enough before I went to bed. No fun :(

I have apple juice in my fridge so if i have a reaction I drink an apple juice and eat a hard boiled egg. A friend of mine does apple juice and a tablespoon of Peanut Butter.

I'd love to hear what other people do as well.

We diabetics are familiar with a product easily found in any drug store, its Glucose Tablets. Just a chewable little flavored wafer that has 45 carbs each and relives a low blood sugar. I usually carry 2 with me when I walk.

My surgeon says never a glucose tablet.. I am type 1 and can only treat with milk and a few Peanut Butter crackers! Those tabs are pure sugar and can cause Dumping symptoms

Have you ever had any problems before your surgery? I had mine in 2005 and was not diabetic. Last summer I started having dizzy spells. Doctors thought it was from having radiation therapy to my brain tumor and from getting Sjograns syndrome, a cursor to the radiation. I started having 2 or more attacks a day and got so sick I could barely move. Good thing that came from it...I lost over 100 lbs in less than 6 months. I originally stopped loosing weight after 98 lbs, but my bad eating habits returned and I gained my weight back. I am able to eat regular size meals...which is bad because I was told that I was actually storing food in my asophagase which can lead to other problems. Anyway, when I got sick I was vomiting so much I got back to barely being able to eat...thought I was doing good at getting back under control. Like I was told so many times...this is a tool and you have to control your eating habits. If you are having a lot of trouble with the hypoglycemia please go to an endocrinologist with your records of food and blood glucose levels and get tested for Addisons disease. I was diagnosed with it in January of 2014 and wad told it was caused from the gastric bypass surgery and if I don't take my hydrocort (steroids) I will die. They only replace what your glands stopped producing.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
