Good luck! I dread that part of the process (the liquid diet) worse than the surgery i think lol. Keep us posted on how you are doing please.

I have a two-week liquid diet starting on the 17th for my surgery on September 1 and I am definitely dreading it more than the surgery or any of the post-op discomfort. I keep referring to it as "doctor-sanctioned" anorexia to my friends and family. I'm only supposed to have 500 calories a day of Protein shakes, sugar free jello/popcicles, and green salad with zero-calorie dressing. Meanwhile I'm supposed to continue working out, which is currently burning 500+ calories 5 days a week. And all of this while I still have 100% of my stomach! Seems INSANE!

Good luck to you tomorrow and for the rest of the week. Hopefully it won't be as bad as we all fear.

lucky me only has to do 4 days of liquid pre-op. my doc always does surgery on tuesday, so i will start it on friday, go through the weekend, and then probably take off monday... cause i plan on sleeping through as much of this liquid diet as i can! :)

good luck, you will do great! keep remembering the reward to come.....

Here's the good news.... The pre-op liquid diet is harder than the post-op one. After surgery, you're no longer hungry. Use your Protein shakes to get through it, they'll keep you satisfied much longer than the salads and popsicles will. I prefer the Premier brand of Protein Shakes. I get them at costco, but I think Safeway may carry them too. They're not as sickly sweet as some of the others, and they have 30 grams of Protein for only 160 calories. Good luck to all of you!

I make my own Protein shakes at home with whey Isolate powder, soy milk, and flavored syrups. I've been doing that for a while now. But when I start my pre-op diet, my nutritionist wants me using 4 oz. almond milk and 4 oz. Water instead of the soy milk and sugar-free syrups (the Syrup I use now is just normal Hershey's chocolate or strawberry or both!). So I am worried about how those will end up tasting. I did order a bunch of different flavors of Torani sugar-free syrups, so we'll see how I like those.

Today I went to the bookstore at the college where I work (serves as sort of a convenience store as well) and bought a vanilla Muscle Milk. OMG, it was SOOOOOOO gross. I only managed to force down about half of it and had to pour the rest out. That sucks, because I was hoping the fact they sold Muscle Milk might be a good back-up plan if I'm not able to make it home on my lunch break during my pre-op diet or if I just needed to get some extra Protein in post-op. I guess I can still try the chocolate, but they do have a lot of carbs, so I am thinking I should just avoid them altogether. The Protein Shakes I've already been making at home are way healthier (even with their soy milk and Hershey's syrup) than those Muscle Milk ones anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
