Made my first big mistake (3 weeks out).

Recommended Posts

My NUT said I could eat some soft fruit, just a little. I had 3 small cubes of watermelon...don't know if its because I ate too fast or the consistency but I felt like i couldn't breathe, like I needed to throw up but couldn't. It was NOT a good feeling at all. I just walked around the kitchen, felt like I kept swallowing and couldn't talk and that something was stuck in my chest. Ughh, it sucked.

You know what it isn't the first time on here that I have heard of patients saying that they thought watermelon would be a good choice to start off with and it wasn't. hmmmm maybe there is something to this after all.

hope all gets better for you!

My first fruits were canned peaches and mangos. Maybe try them. For some reason I thought watermelon would be too "fibrous". But I eat lots of it now!

I can't do watermelon. I tend to chew it and suck it and spit out the remaining Fiber.

I did canned peaches and pears no problem

A raw banana no problem

I had to introduce new foods very slowly...only 1 or 2 bites of something new at a time. Fruits and veggies are a wildcard for me even at 8.5 months out. There are a couple of go-to veggies for me - bell peppers (but not green ones), broccoli and cauliflower. I can do some fruits in my smoothies.

I thought I would be able to do Flathead cherries that are so great this time of year...I ate 10 of them without thinking and was in excruciating pain for a couple of hours!

Also, if you try a new food and it doesn't agree with you, try it again in a couple of weeks.

You ate to fast. We all have to learn that. I did the same thing with the first apple. Did not pay attention to eating and swallowed to large a peice. Not fun.

Thanks everyone. I'll stick with canned peaches for now...I love peaches anyway!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
