i saw him today and asked about revising to a sleeve. he said insurance would never approve because my weight is too low. has anyone been through this? this has discouraged me. i am very unhappy with my band and it has been difficult to eat. All he said was let's do an adjustment. now i feel like there is no hope. i have to live with this band or get it removed. this sucks but i knew what i was getting into when i got the band.

Would it help to get a second opinion? Some docs are more willing to advocate for you with the insurance companies.

If he's not willing to advocate for you, try another surgeon. A second or third opinion cannot hurt. Hope you get the answer you need soon.

I had the band & was revised to the sleeve with a pre-sleeve weight of 155 at the time of my revision. I was having trouble with the band, which was documented, as it had partially slipped. While I had a lower weight, Kaiser CO did approve me. Mind you, my band was done through a different insurance company all together, so I thought for sure I wouldn't get approved. I was thankful as all I had to pay was the deductible ($1500).

I would consider another surgeon that might support you. If you continue to 'have issues" & it's documented, you may be able to get the revision.

In general, your surgeon is correct that insurance won't cover it if you don't have a qualifying BMI (the typical 35/40 depending upon comorbidities) but it never hurts to ask. I have seen, as Domika has experienced, people get the revision when the band is giving problems, so as with reconstructive surgery, it seems to get down to that old "medical necessity" problem. If you can document problems with it, particularly to the extent of it having to be removed, then there is a good chance for it. Beware of policies that limit a person to only one bariatric surgery per lifetime.

Your surgeon gets paid to do surgery, so if he thought there was a way to get it done I can't see why he wouldn't try. But - perhaps he just doesn't know how to make it work. You'd need to have documented health problems due to the band to have a chance. As suggested, perhaps another surgeon can help. I wish you luck!

Thank you all. I will seek a second opinion. It doesnt hurt to try. I appreciate all the feedback.

Lalaj- I am in the same situation you're in!! I had a lapband done a yr ago, I could never get more then 4.5 ccs because it's to tight!!!! I eventually had a slippage, got it unfilled!! I have not lost any weight and every time it eat I get terrible pain on the port area. I talked to my dr about a revision and he is not for it because my bmi is too low, the last time I weighed in I was 153. So, I decided not to fight the band anymore and indulge myself w. food until I weight where I need to be!!! Is this too crazy to do?!?! What do you think?! Mind you, I'm self paid, thankfully I purchased insurance that will cover any complication and it's good for another year. The insurance will pay for or and removal of the band and I will have to pay for the sleeve!!! I'm finding my self soooo discouraged!!!!

Hi Lalaj,

My insurance won't cover for me, so I'm self paying and having it done in Mexico. If you haven't already, you should check it out.

I'm having it done via a single incision through the belly button, so less scarring and faster recovery.

Good luck to you!

I was 160 at time that approval was gained. my doc was a true advocate, highlighting my comorbitities, family history, and chance of weight gain. Because I was lower weight my doc did not make my stomach super small, but I do understand that it is just a tool...to date loving it more than my band!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
