Family friend died from lapband surgery last week

Recommended Posts

Please pray for the family of a friend of ours who died from the lap band surgery last week. Boy do we take things like sagging skin, weight not coming off fast enough, fills and unfills for granted, I guess we should all just be happy that we made it through surgery to even worry about these things!

My understanding is during the surgery (very GOOD surgeon, whom has done thousands of lap-band surgeries, with a VERY HIGH success rate) part of her stomach lining was cut through and she developed an infection due to that, and unfortunately passed away as result.

Thank you for your prayers she was a younger woman with a family etc, they will def. need some prayers!!

How sad. Prayers are goin out for her and her family and loved ones.

The only other death I had heard of by some very experienced surgeons in my area (the Port Huron team) happened the same way. So sad. This is a good reminder that this surgery is not without its risks, however small they may be. It is still a big consideration in our decision making.

I am very sorry for your loss.

I think the death risk is something like 1 in 1000 as opposed to rny being 1 in 200 (or 1 in 100, I've seen both stats) We think of it as so safe but the truth is no matter how safe a surgery is surgery there is always a risk. It doesn't matter how low the death rate is it is terrible for the person and their family if they are that 1 person. I hope and pray that her family understands that she did this for them, so that she could be healthy and enjoy life. A tragedy that that desire was not met.

This is sad, indeed. You know, there is a saying that docs have and that is that patients have ONE rule when it comes to surgery. Don't die. Sometimes no matter how great the surgeon and no matter how well the procedure was done, people have complications and they die.

My heart goes out to the person and the family.

I will say a prayer for this family. I am definately understanding what they are going through. So sorry for their loss. There will be mixed emotions and as I have learned with the grief process there are stages of grief and sometimes it hits you like a ton of bricks. So I definately will be praying for this family. Take care

What a shame. It could have been any one of us. Really hits home, how precious life is.

So true, that's why I do not recommend anyone to do the surgery, I can only speak for myself. I would feel so awfull for the rest of my life if I recommend for someone to do it and something happens to them. I am praying for the family.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
