Pre-Op Diet Causing Bad Breath?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So my husband has been complaining about my breath since I started the two week pre-op liquid diet. I'm all Protein Shakes, no solids (including Jello or pudding). He says it's unlike any bad breath he's ever experienced! I brush regularly, and this only started when I started this high Protein, low carb/low fat pre-op diet. Has this happened to anyone else??

ketosis and the accompanying horrible breath are notorious for going with a high Protein, low carb diet. Don't be surprised to get sour B.O. and funny smelling urine, too (sorry to be the bearer of bad news).

Yep was gonna say the same thing! Low carb high Protein is a bad breath, body odor habitat! I hated always feeling warm and smelling when I did low carb.. But just think soon none of that will matter !

@@Capegin, my husband had bad breath when he went on the Adkin's diet, similar to what people eat during pre-op liquid phase.

OMG, thank goodness I'm a teacher and not around students right now!!!! I teach middle school, and I would so get a reputation as the smelly teacher! After reading these replies, I promptly stocked up on sugar free gum and breath mints! At least I know the preop diet is doing its job, for whatever that's worth! Thanks for the replies!

I had this problem early after surgery but it only lasted about a month. I am now two months out and its no longer an issue. Good luck I know how hard kids can be, especially those middle schoolers.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
