sdocforce 55 Posted August 5, 2014 Well it only took until July...but...I am now finally able to run the 3.2 miles of the 5K I tried to complete twice earlier this Spring. Turns out I was psyching myself out. I learned by accident that if I slow down when it gets tough instead of panicking I can keep going longer. I know you are all thinking "duh who doesn't know that". Well Me...never having been a runner I didn't realize what I was doing to myself. I believe I had just convinced myself I was never going to be a runner and would never be able to run more than 2 or 2.5 miles. But I'm happy to say that I CAN...and WILL keep doing it now. The last time I went out I actually went for 4.1 miles. I know this is not a big deal for "runners", but for myself it might as well be a MARATHON! I am so happy that I did this for myself. I am still figuring out what works best, but I do know that it is a good feeling that I can lace up and go running whenever I want and DO IT! Take care all. Thanks for listening! And thanks for all the good information here. It has been such a wonderful resource for me this last (almost year...YIKES). And for the first time in my life I am within 20 lbs of my goal weight. I have never ever worn a size 12...these are all firsts for me and it is a wonderful time. 20 lisacaron, swimbikerun, Ginger Snaps and 17 others reacted to this

Cody's mom 247 Posted August 5, 2014 Yes, toot toot, pat pat, way to go, and can I throw in a a quick "how exciting".. Now how did you start? I would love to learn to run, but at my current state, I can barely walk very far. I saw two earlier post about someone who ran a mile with their son, and another person who ran for 20 consecutive minutes, and all I could think of was "wow look at them go, I hope I can do that one day". SummerWheeler 8 Posted August 6, 2014 Loved your comment on running. Myself just started jogging from one mailbox to another. Slowly getting to running past 5 mailboxes before I walk again. I'm sure it doesn't look attractive but the key is to keep moving. I feel so accomplished! Note to others like me who have never jogged before. Get some shorts or pants with a drawstring on them otherwise your pants fall down quickly!
Ginger Snaps 1,323 Posted August 6, 2014 Wow and Wow! Way to go! Give yourself credit -- marathon runners started with a mile, then two, then a 5K and then more. Even if you never want to run more than a 5K, you've RUN A FREAKIN' 5K!!!! I'm doing the Zombies, Run 5k program and just finished week 2 today. I've signed up for a 5K at the end of September just to keep me honest and I plan on being able to run the entire thing. Your post is an inspiration to me! katesuccess 990 Posted August 6, 2014 WOOHOO!!! Way to go Sdocforce! That's fabulous. AND it give me both hope and incentive. I"m currently 2/3 the way through a Couch-to-5K app on my phone, and surprisingly I"m liking it. I've never liked jogging before, and never thought I could do it and stick it out, but finally I'm feeling like I'm on my way. Your post is so good to read, and inspires me to feel more hopeful as I sit here at my desk wondering where I'll get the energy to get out and do it tonight - I'll get if from your success today at least! Thanks and Congratulations!
MsShayeB 6 Posted August 7, 2014 Sdocforce....I was just told about couch to 5k and I am starting it tomorrow. I have been doing 2 miles 3 to 4 times a week and I had to do a dance on the track when I ran a full lap without stopping. I'm super excited about running!!! 1 catfish87 reacted to this
