Any problems in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm a "newbie" here! I just want to say I am so glad I found this forum! I am planning sleeve surgery for this fall in Mexico and so many of my questions have been answered on here. This type of surgery is not well known by my family and friends and this has been a blessing to find! I've struggled since the age of 5 years old with my weight and I am so ready to step out in faith at 35 to have this procedure done!

Right now, I am being discouraged when I tell people I am going to Mexico to have this done! I am not fearful at all! Please let me know of any negative things you faced in Mexico that would help prepare me just incase! :) I have read nothing but positive things and just want to be aware of things that could arise like crossing the border, etc.

Also, I have heard from someone that had it done there that the dr. advised her to have her gallbladder removed at the same time to avoid complications later. She had fortunately already had it taken out so she didn't have any issues. But, I was just curious if anyone had this done at the same time they were sleeved and if the recovery and recovery time was any different. If it is beneficial, I may go ahead and have it done the same time.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! God Bless!

I'm going to Mexico this fall as well, and have absolutley no concerns at all about going there.. There is a section on this site you can insert your doctors name and get all the reviews on him.

When are you booking for and what Doctor.

Awesome! Thank you! I am thinking around the beginning of Nov. That seems to be the slowest time for us at home! I have narrowed it down to two doctors that I've heard wonderful things about. Dr. Ortiz and dr. Ponce de leon. I don't think I can go wrong with either of them! :)

I'm going to Dr. Ortiz in January. I've spent the past month researching doctors and countries. I feel very comfortable and confident in my choice. Dr. Ortiz has an incredible reputation from all the research I've done. Good luck!!!

Whereabouts in MX are you going? For most of the CA/TX facilities, you're minutes over the border. I had my surgery in Piedras Negras MX, just over the Texas/Mexico Border. Like, in five minutes I was at the hospital. Great facility, very clean. The staff is attentive-- you're the whole reason they're there. They escort you from poiint to point and you're well taken care of while on site.

I didn't tell a lot of people because I didn't want anyone to try to talk me out of it. i couldn't be swayed but I didn't want to listen to anyone's long diatribe, blah blah blah, I don't care, I am going.

It was a great experience.

I'm going to Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana. He is with the OCC. He has tons of videos on YouTube and was featured in Newsweek.

I am considering Dr. Elias Ortiz with "A Lighter me". Haven't heard anything negative on either of these doctors. I have heard the coordinator, Trish with dr. Ponce de leon is awesome too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
