Back up out your nose when you lay down!?

Recommended Posts

I am over a year post op - 2 days ago I got stuck....after some painful wretching I finally got relief...then that night every time that I layed down vomit came up into my throat to choke me and out my nose...I 'slept' sitting up all night and this continued to happen through out the night. the next day I had half a cup of coffee...bt felt awful then at dinner I tried a few tiny bites of chicken but it wasn't going down. My dr had told me to take Zantac after getting stuck, so before bed a took a Zantac with a sip of Water and once again every time fell asleep I would wake up choking.....What the heck is going on? has this ever happened to anyone?

Please describe the "Wretching" episode? Are you talking about full blown hurling where your stomach convulses and expels food from your lower stomach or was it PBing?

I would recommend you call your doctor. If you've never refluxed before this could be a sign of a small slip. You might need some Fluid removed to let the band reposition itself?

@@WheelCrazy I agree with TMF above. Give the Dr. a call and have the placement of your band checked and let the doctor determine how much if any Fluid to remove. You should not be choking on anything in your sleep or need to sleep sitting up. This is also very dangerous, you could asphyxiate if you aspirate (breathe in) the vomit.

Let us know how you are doing please after you speak to the Dr.

I did call the Dr this morning...my luck he isn't in on Mondays :) the nurse said she would let him know and call me back, I haven't heard anything yet but they did make me an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. Meanwhile being up and moving around I feel ok, I even just drank some chicken broth and so far so good...it just seed crazy that it was 2 nights in a row, and yeah really scary that it would choke me and really gross that it came out my nose! Oh the struggles! Lol

@@WheelCrazy What did your doctor say when you saw him? I am really curious as this very thing happened to me last night. I wasn't stuck on anything, I think I ate too soon before going to sleep and ended up waking up with that reflux that you described where I felt like it was going to burst out my nose. Nothing did but it wasn't a great feeling, and nothing I have experienced before.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
