I'm just about 2 weeks out from surgery (7/21). The first several days after being discharged, I was taking Tylenol with codeine to help with pain. It also knocked me out at night.

I'm not in pain anymore - haven't been for about a week - so I've not touched the pain meds. But now I find I cannot fall asleep. For the last week, I've been in bed by 11pm, and tossing and turning until well after 3am.

Is insomnia common? Is there a cause related to my RNY? I don't (and never have) drink coffee, a and I've not had any caffeine since 6 weeks pre-op.

I can't tolerate this. My parents took the kids while I was in recovery these last 2 weeks, but they're home now. I can't afford to be up all night and a zombie all day.

Ugh. This is awful.

Yes I too have had trouble sleeping. I have read here that it is common, not sure why. I have been using the pain meds only at night to help me sleep. Tried NyQuil zzz the other night and had a bad reaction. Wonder how others are dealing with it?

Im awake too. Generally I sleep from 11pm-3am, then 5-6:30am. I need then a nap during the day. Im almost 4 weeks out.

My kids have been here the whole time, but are 20, 13 and 14. They're really good about my weird schedule and the fact that I'm tired and only cook 1-2 meals a day and can't drive yet.

My partner hasn't been great with things. Their father has actually been wonderful about taking me to appointments and helping out.

I've really only had a few nights of good sleep and a few of those were during my 3 hospital stays.

I've been off pain meds for 2 weeks. I thought taking one tonight would help me sleep. Obviously it didnt work, just made me nauseous.

I can't recall this happening, but on nights when I can't fall asleep I put on some soft music and that usually does the trick.

I didn't sleep a bit from the night I got my surgery until after my 1 week post-op appointment.

In the hospital it was because I was constantly getting up to walk or having someone checking one thing or another.

When I got released I assumed it was because I couldn't lay on my stomach (drain port), so I could never get comfortable enough to doze for longer than 20 minutes at a time.

Once I was able to comfortably lay on my stomach again though, I've had no problems since (though I've only slept about 3-4 hours a night for the last 20 years anyway).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
