Why cant i throw up when i get too full.

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks out and I do relatively well with most meals. I have had those few times when I took that next bite and thought I was going to die. I feel the urge to throw up, but I cannot. I either get a small amount of bile or liquid but no food. It's frustrating because there is no relief.

Does this happen to anyone else. I've tried to drink Water to get something up but all I get is the liquid.

I then live with that heaviness in my chest for the next hour and try to remember the next time ...

I know this isn't the scientific answer, but maybe it's your body's way of telling you to stop doing that. And it's not going to let you off the hook by giving you the "pleasure" of vomiting. I overate early on just one time. Like you, I didn't vomit and I felt horrible for hours. But lesson learned....I never did it again! I slowed down and took a LONG time between bites so I could tell when to stop before it was too late.

My mom had the gastric bypass 10 years ago and still can't throw up. It's really weird. As bad as she feels at times she can't. Even having the stomach bug she can't.

Throwing up was not in fashion in my day, but whoa baby!, do I stick my finger down my throat and tickle, tickle, heave ho..... :) It took me about two months to learn that and now, I rarely need to vomit. We teach ourselves how not to eat so that we don't become miserable!

Oof, reading this made me shiver. I have emitaphobia (fear of vomiting).. I would take the hours of pain over vomiting. I haven't had the trouble of over eating and it's probably this exact fear that keeps me from doing so. Good luck to you? I think?

My mom had a gastric bypass 7 years ago, she regularly makes herself vomit in the event she eats too much. I cringe at the thought. She tells me it's not that bad, but in my entire 29 years of existence, I've only thrown up twice (not counting too young to remember). I couldn't even begin to know how to deal with it. Nausea sends me into severe panic attacks.

Bah.. sorry. I'm really good at word vomit, though.

I'm a little confused. .. isn't throwing up advised against since it can stretch the sleeve?

Thanks for all of the responses. Believe me it is not going to be a habit for me ever.

I think it's just panic. I'm glad I am not alone.

I know what you mean. It is a relief when I eat something that suddenly does not agree with me and comes up; until then I am literally in pain. This happens when it doesn't agree with me for me, not when I overeat. I haven't been able to overeat to tell the truth.

Then there are times when it doesn't happen and I literally roll around my bed for hours. I don't know what causes the difference but boy is it a lesson about certain foods.

Given this, I only eat things I know when I go out.

I am so glad I am not the only one with severe fears of vomiting. And now I know the name for it!

That was the biggest fear I had with this surgery and I was scared to death of it!!

I am about 7 weeks post-op (I think) and have had to induce vomiting three times. It's nothing I ever want to do again, but at the time I was just miserable with the pressure and sickness that taking one or two too many bites can bring on. It has helped me learn my limit.

In all my life I've never been able to make myself vomit. Unfortunately (or fortunately) my first purposeful vomit was in a very disgusting public restroom. All I had to do was close my eyes, think about the filth I was leaning over, and the puke just happened. Ugh.

Mostly, I just try reeeeealy hard to be aware of what my last bite should be. I'm getting better at being able to recognize what my last 3-2-1 bites are.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
