Eating too much too fast?

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm now 5 days post op and it's been getting easier and easier to get down my puréed food... I'm actually able to chew my regular chicken down to purée in my mouth and it's been fine. It hurts a tiny bit after I swallow sometimes but i almost fear I'm eating too much. The first 2 days I couldn't even get down broth. Is it ok to be doing this well this fast? I'm not stretching my stomach am I???? I mean .. I'm sticking to the 2 ounces at a time I think.

Every doctor has their own timetable for when you can be eating what, but I don't think any doctor would say chicken is ok after 5 days, no matter how much you chew. Also, if it hurts, why keep on doing it?

Make sure you stick to puréed good even if you "chew" it enough to be "puréed". That's a huge no no when I had my surgery. Especially meat, and if you do have meat make sure you mix it with a sauce or gravy. I was in pure Clear Liquids for 1 week post op. So I'm worried that you will really hurt yourself not even being a week out :(

Agree with everyone else above, you should stick to your surgeon's rules. Also, I'm concerned that you say you "think" you are sticking to two ounces. You need to be weighing/measuring your food, not guessing. People are notoriously bad in estimating the size of their portions.

Thanks. Honestly? The nutritionist told my class that we could purée the food in our mouth before swallowing.. She said "who wants to drink chicken? " So I'm not NOT following the rules I was given..... And I'm measuring with ice cube trays because I read that's a good way to measure ounces. Everything hurts a little after I swallow it, so I figured that's normal....

Even if the chicken were pureed in a blender, from what I've read on here, most people who choose to eat meat, don't do so for a few weeks at least. Protein Shakes will go down easier and allow you to get more grams per day. There's nothing wrong with those being your main source of Protein for the time being.

I absolutely agree with everyone that even if you are doing fine and not experiencing any kind of problem then too you should take it slowly and not overdo anything.Follow the instructions given by your surgeon as that will help to accelerate your healing process. Eating pureed food is beneficial as the stomach is less stressed when digesting the food.

Yeah I had to eat puréed food in the hospital the next day before I could leave. I am supposed to be eating puréed already as per the surgeon. Guess every dr is different! I was given a sample menu for the first week post op and it has puréed chicken, fish, pork, steak..

I'll be 1 1/2 weeks out when I see my doctor tomorrow. I'm hoping he will say I can start purée foods. After discharge from hospital I was on clear liquids only for 5 days then add Protein Drinks. Still waiting for the ok for purée! Can't wait!

My surgeon allowed foods like scrambled egg immediately after surgery (1 tablespoons of scrambled egg, yogurt, etc) - my local doc was the polar opposite. So for two weeks after surgery, I was able to get some foods in, then when I went to my local doc, had to go back to liquids. (I was self-pay, so had a surgeon and follow ups with a local bariatric surgeon)

As far as "thinking" you're getting 2 ounces - I think investing in a food scale would be good. You can get them just about anywhere and they are fairly inexpensive. This will be good for measuring the weight of your Protein.

Also remember on the portions - sometimes I couldn't finish the 2 ounces of puree. Don't go over the the NUT/Doc's plan, you don't have to eat it all. Full may feel differently than it did prior to surgery. Also, I try not to eat until full, I try to eat until I've satisfied the hunger. There's a difference. When I eat until I'm full, I feel a pinch in my stomach or my nose runs or I do a hiccup/burp thing - that means STOP! I try not to get to that point.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
