Pre-Op Liquid Diet Ideas...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, happy Sturday!

I started my pre-op liquid diet yesterday, and two days in I'm sick of it, lol! I had some chicken broth for "dinner" yesterday because after a day of Protein Shakes, I was craving something salty. Also, I think I've always known that part of my food compulsion has to do with the feeling and texture of foods, and this is really testing that. Having a break from it for a month or so will definitely do me good, but I'm thinking about it constantly right now.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for coping with the pre-op diet? I'm using Bariatric fusion protien powders, and I do love the flavors I bought, but I can see them getting old fast. Oh, and I did try mixing the unflavored powder in the chicken broth and it was HORRIBLE. It caked all up and didn't dissolve, so there were giant powder chunks in it. Nasty.

Anyway, I'm open to any and all tips!

Thanks,

Ginnie

unjury makes a chicken Soup which is a nice savory flavor as opposed to the shakes. They come in individual packages.

I also purchased some hot chocolates from www.mybariatricpantry.com - it was nice to drink something hot as opposed to cold shakes.< /p>

I also suggest trying some sugar free Torani syrups to change up the flavors...

Add some sugar free peppermint Syrup to a chocolate shake.

Add some sugar free vanilla or hazelnut to a chocolate shake.< /p>

Add some sugar free raspberry to a vanilla shake.

Use some ice cubes to bulk the shake up and make them thicker.

On my pre-op diet I started drinking Decaf green tea - it really helped with the hunger.

Best of luck to you! This part of your journey will be over before you know it!

If you are mixing Protein Powder with hot liquid, you need to use a food thermometer to make sure the liquid is under 130 degrees, or it will clump like that. At least most Protein powders will. There are some Soup, Cappuccino, and hot chocolate flavors that are optimized for mixing hot, and those you can mix as hot as you want as long as the liquid isn't boiling.

If they are permitted under your diet plan, you might want to check them out if you are craving something hot -- especially the soup if you are craving something savory and hot.

Soup variety box:

You can also buy boxes of individual flavors at the same store.

Hot chocolate variety box:

Same deal, you can buy boxes of individual flavors as well.

Cappuccino:

They also sell amaretto cappuccino and vanilla cappuccino flavor.

For the cappuccino and hot chocolate, I recommend adding in some extra flavor via instant coffee granules, Torani SF syrups, Sweet Leaf Sweet Drops, etc. They are really good but to me they are a bit weak in flavor and I like to strengthen them. The cappuccino and hot chocolate I mix with a heated 50/50 blend of Water and skim milk, and the soup is fine (to me) with plain hot water.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
