I strongly recommend Canadians get banded in Canada or only in the United States if they are very near the border and that is the closest lapband surgeon. If you have any type of complications or when you need the regular fills most doctors in Canada will not touch you because you are not their patient and due to liability issues. Frankly also why should they desire to when you deliberately chose to go to Mexico. Lapband weight loss surgery by the very nature of it necessitates strong aftercare and support and should be a high priority.

I went to Dr.Ortiz Mexico and had no problems. And there are doctors that will help you if you have any problems. I live in Edmonton and I see a doctor in Calgary that does my fills because the doctors in Edmonton are narrow minded. But if I had an emergency all I have to do is go to the hospital they work out of and they have to see me. So it is not that bad. Also remember that most of the doctors in Canada learnd how to do the Lap-Band by doctors in Mexico. Dr.Ortiz trains Doctors all over the world and has placed over 3000 Lap-Bands, so I would trust him more than a doctor in Canada that has just started doing them.

I have no regrets about going to Mexico. I went with a friend who was banded at the same time and it was a fun adventure. We have a surgeon up here to do our aftercare.

It has still been a lot cheaper for us to do it this way.

However, that was almost a year ago and I'm amazed at how many more options are available now for both banding and fills in this country and just over the border.

HI: Research the Toronto Laproscopic Band Clinic. The Yau was one of the pioneers along with Dr. Joffe that brought the band to Canada. Research into the after care is absolutely mandatory and I place the TLBC second to none. They also have a nutrionist on staff who will help you free as well as they have a conference call program just starting for out of towners. Something to consider as well is is travel health insurance. Most obese people have high blood pressure and if you should become ill outside the country, insurance companies will not pay for any "related" illness. We all know that high blood pressure is linked to most emergency illnesses. Just a few thoughts. Doddie

I actually started out with tlbc and they were no help to me and Dr.Cobourn was so helpful he even call me him self and i had ask for a letter from tlbc so my husband could get his rrsp out of Australia and they said no so guess what i don't really like tlbc and they are definitely not getting my money. or my friends money. The service Dr. Cobourn offer is great probably better than anyone else.

Hi: Sorry you had difficulty with TLBC so you certainly should go to another clinic. I am not too sure what the TLBC would have to do with RRSPs but that is another issue. My point was that everyone that has been banded has had their own reasons for saying "their clinic/doctore was the best" and in reality that is true. We have to believe in our doctors in order to go thru such a proceedure. That is why we all say everyone must do their own research. I wish you well as I know the band is a wonderful tool for us. My husband is Australian and under Australian law, superannuation funds ( RRSP ) are locked in until your retire. You can apply to have some funds released for medical treatment. To get some funds released for medical treatment you need a letter from your family MD and another from the specialist doctor both saying they recommend you have the surgery as your health is at risk. My family doctor did me a letter however TLBC wouldn't. When I asked Dr. Cobourn he was more then happy to help.

Yeah but the total process took about 4 months as we applied from Canada. Then when the cheque finally came we had to wait another 6 weeks for the bank in Canada to clear the funds from Australia
