Over the counter medications; lets discuss.

Recommended Posts

The only medication I have been told I cannot take now that I have had RNY are any type of NSAIDs. Ibuprofen used to be my go to medication for the joint pain caused by my RA but I can't do that anymore.

Another poster told me we are not supposed to take Pepto Bismol and I didn't know anything like that. When I ended up back in the hospital and told the surgeon I took it he never said anything to the tune of not supposed to take it.

What do you know of that we can/can't take?

Not sure on Pepto Bismol. I take Acetaminophen now. If my back is acting up, I take 1/4 pill of Tramadol which was prescribed in hospital and Dr said I could continue. My whole system has changed. Before I would have taken a whole pill or more, but now 1/4 will do. So interesting.

I take Tums every now and again, so I will need to check on that when I see Dr again in 2 weeks.

This is a good topic that I hope others post more information. I'm worried about the no NSAIDS, but am still going for the RNY. (No surgery date yet) So I do need to know what I should/should not be taking. Thanks!!

That is actually a huge deal for me because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I stopped taking IBU about a month before my surgery to get used to not being able to have it.

I have done ok in that respect but I will say that I have been hospitalized twice for medicine getting stuck.

Well that is scary...medicine getting stuck? What is that about? I mean, where does it get stuck, what happens when it's stuck and what do they do in the hospital to help?

Well, I have to take a lot of medication. The medicine that got stuck was one of my Epilepsy meds. A pretty big pill. I have to cut it in half and in quarters.

It felt like it was in my chest, at the bottom so I would say it was at the end of my esophagus where it meets the stomach.

Because of my hernia repair, everything is very tight. This can happen with some foods too. By the time I get to the hospital it has either dissolved or it came back up.

The reason I ended up going to the ER is because I had been vomiting all day and not able to keep any fluids down. Because of that, I also could not take any medicine.

Given the fact that I have Epilepsy, I never want to go a day or more without my medication. By going to the ER, they can take care of it through IV.

Just so happens I was admitted both times. Because of the vomiting, I did end up with Pancreatitis.

I have a question about cold medicine... and since I can't seem to start my own topic - I thought i'd add it to this topic.

I think I'm coming down with something. The Post Nasal drip is killing me... and I'm coughing it up... I don't want it to irritate my new tummy. I had the RNY on 11/04. My throat is sore etc.

Can I take Tylenol Cold and Sinus?

What do you all take for when you aren't feeling up to par? I have taken liquid tylenol (childrens) .. and I hate the way it makes my tummy feel.

Thanks for any help!

I would call the Bariatric program nurse & see what s/he says best bet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
