How do you know if your liver is shrinking?

Recommended Posts

So my doctor has me drink 3 or 4 Slimfast shakes a day for 10 days plus sugar free pudding, popsicles, yogurt, etc. I've been sticking to the diet but I've only lost three pounds in 6 days. I'm scared he is going to open me up on Tuesday and say "This liver is too fatty. Cancel the surgery!"

Are hunger pains a sign? Because I haven't really had any.

Stressed out.

As long as you are following the diet you will be fine. Your internal organs are the first things to lose fat.

from what i understand, the fact that you're having liquids and sticking to low-fat options during the pre-op will help shrink your liver. i wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you're sticking with it and you're actually losing weight (even if only a few pounds), that in itself is helping. my surgeon said the only way she wouldn't do the surgery is if on surgery day i would've gained rather than lost. i lost only 6lbs during my 2 week pre-op diet. my sleeve was done on 6/25 and it went perfectly! hope this helps. :)

Fortunately, my surgeon doesn't expect/require weight lioss for the two week pre-op diet. He said he would rather us not be malnoirised, but... He is very strict about very low carbs. So, he jas is do the Protein Shakes and a very narrow list of foods to supplement (vinegarette dressings, green leafy vegetables, and Protein, protein, protein. He even said bacon is ok!

If you are so hungry that the cat is starting to look appetizing, your liver is probably shrinking.

Just kidding!

I am so in awe of all of you that have to do this! My doctor doesn't require it of us. And, boy am I glad because it was enough hell having to lose 10% of my highest weight, which was 35 lbs. plus the additional 9 lbs. in friends they decided to bring along for the party. That alone took me 6 months of crazy up and down battle. If he told me I had to do 2 weeks of this on top of the last 6 months of that insanity I might have broken down in his office in tears.

i could actually feel it. well, let me clarify... i had terrible fatty liver prior to surgery and i had chronic pain in my liver from the poor processing it was doing. as my liver shrank i could honestly tell that i was having less pain and inflammation. surgeon said it was still significant at surgery, but i DID shrink it some...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
