My Surgery Experience

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on July 28th two days ago so I just thought I'd share my experience. I went to nuhealth, a big hospital in east meadow, N.Y. I got sleeved by Dr venkatesh. I arrived at 6am and got wheeled in at about 8am. I don't remember going into the or very well I just remembered my arms not fitting because it was a very small table so they wheeled up some platforms for me to put them on then I was out. When I woke up it hurt really bad, but I couldn't tell the nurse because I was still under a little. When I finally did she gave me some painkillers. I remember seeing my family I said a few words to them then fell asleep. It hurt more because I sleep on my side and sleeping on my back gave me pain so I couldn't sleep well. When night came around they took me from recovery and brought me to a room on the 11th floor. The first day and a half was miserable because I was thirsty and my throat was dry and they keep waking me up to walk every two hours even at like 3am. Also the anastesia made me feel nauceous so I kept dry heaving which hurt my incisions/stomach. The next day I did the barium swallow around 11am it was rough to stand so long because I felt nauseous but I met a gastric bypass patient who felt the exact same way as me so that made me feel better lol. I had dinner that day a few bites of Jello, Italian ice, broth and tea. All of them had fake sugars in them which worries me but I guess its ok for a few months. After that night I was kind of rebellious and took off my heart rate monitor/ leg cuffs because they were annoying my soul. Today they took out my IV I'm feeling pretty good just sitting here waiting to get discharged. I had a high white blood count so they're checking to see if I still do. I'm having a little trouble with the two bites every 20 mins that my doc set for me. Mentally I just feel like I need to eat more I guess thats you call head hunger. I need to be strict with it tho I don't want any leaks. Ill probably get an app to help me with that. Thats basically my story.

Sounds about right. Surgery is hard no matter what kind. Sleeve is worse because of the gas pain. I'm a month out and I feel completely normal. I had insomnia for a while and that was not ideal but it passed. Just hang in there and do what the doctor orders!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
