does anyone here use Mirena?

Recommended Posts

I am going to the doctor next week to get my annual check up and to discuss a long term form of birth control. I am wondering if anyone on the forum uses Mirena and what they think of it. I am undecided between Mirena and nexplanon.

I have had my Mirena in for a little over 6 years and I love it! I decided to get it about a year after my second child was born. We were pretty sure we were done having children, but we didn't want to make a permanent decision at that time. I have not had a period since it was implanted and I am enjoying every minute of it. No side effects that I have noticed and no other problems with it. A few months before my 5 year mark my husband had a vasectomy. We decided long ago that once our youngest entered school full time, if we haven't decided to have another child by then, that's it, game over. My gyn said I can go ahead and keep the IUD in as long as I want past the 5 years as long as I am not relying on it for birth control past that 5 year mark. I will keep it in until I am a few months post-op from bariatric surgery just so I don't have to mess with my periods until then. I hope you find the choice that works best for your lifestyle and needs.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
