Ability to drink alcohol post-op, your experiences?

Recommended Posts

Carbonated drinks are out.

No beer. No sodas.

However. Whiskey is fine. Wine is fine.

In the summer I was missing beer. So I let a beer go flat. Then drank it. Yuck!

Gin and " flat" tonic Water is fantastic. Just take the cap off and let it sit in the fridge 24 hours.

I still drink, but not nearly as often. I was a beer lover, but follow the no carbonation rule strictly. Once every week or two I have some margaritas or vodka and waters. I don't eat when I do because it keeps me from drinking. It's my only real "cheating" I do. I enjoy it and overdo it occasionally. I get right back on plan the next morning...hangover or not.

Update... 16 months since I first started this topic. I can say at this point that I can definitely tell the difference in my tolerance. I'm down around 125 lbs and sometimes after a few too many, I forget that my tolerance is not as good, and it can be a disaster lol. I have definitely been able to control it better as of late by learning to drink Water in between drinks.

I still do not drink more than 1 or 2 beers in a night, mainly because the carbonation seems to fill me up. I think this might be part of the tolerance issue as well, hard alcohol vs beer.

Nothing carbonated but liquor is fine. Vodka and Water with a slight lime twist is almost carb free. I was drinking 3 weeks after my surgery...in moderation

This is an old forum...but humor me fellas. How do you handle alcohol after sleeve??? I'm like 1.5 years post sleeve. I love Whiskey. I find I get a huge up front buzz after drinking it..but it fades after 30 min or so. Just curious what other Bros are experiencing. I can drink about 3 mixed drinks before I need to chill...but same thing...it wears off after 30-45 minutes. Hit me up!!

I'm relatively new (month 5) and my biggest issue going in was my ability to continue my social drinking post sleeve while still losing weight.

For ME (not everyone), it's been a 100% success. I drink about half as much as I once did. I don't get any more drunk and enjoy it the same

One man's story...

I haven't had whiskey since being sleeved, but my experience with vodka and rum is similar to yours. The quick initial buzz and then fading after about 45 minutes. I now mostly drink red wine which agrees with my stomach and doesn't take me on the rollercoaster ride.

I think the rapid sobriety is a bit of a blessing. I have been drinking on weekends for over a month and nothing resembling a hangover yet.

Of course that could just because I'm drinking about half as much (or less) than before.

I am consciously drinking much slower, but I'm not sure how long that will last. I think unless I stay vigilant, I could start drinking more.

Wine seems to be the best drink to stretch out. I was at a Super Bowl party and drink about 9 ounces over the course of the 5 hour game.

As I posted before, my tolerance is not nearly as good. It's been an adjustment for sure. Going from beer to hard alcohol I mean. Best thing I do is when I remember to drink Water in between drinks. 18 months post sleeve.

I pretty much am in the same boat as you. Big buzz at first but would have to have a drink about every 30 minutes to keep up with it. I don't plan on overdoing it too much Just a little here and there.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
