MyKidsMom89 70 Posted July 29, 2014 So, I'm having my sleeve done in August-just as I return to a new school year-and I'm wondering if y'all would share with me how much down time you had. I have a high pain tolerance, but I am worried about the fatigue that so many write about. Will I be able to make it through the day? I'm on my feet 80% of the day, so I'm pretty concerned. I know better than to push myself, but I want to be fairly productive, too. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
butterfyeffect 257 Posted July 29, 2014 I've heard people who took as little as one week, but that was mostly for people with desk jobs. I took four weeks off because of the lifting restriction (I'm a nurse) but I felt fine after two weeks, and probably could have worked, but didn't want to risk it. une nouvelle vie 327 Posted July 29, 2014 (edited) I have a desk job and work from home so I am not the norm. I took a week off, but did do some work (about 4 hours a day) on my fourth day post-op. I had no complications and very little pain. I felt 100% like myself again (except no voracious appetite) by the end of the first week. tnpeach 41 Posted July 29, 2014 I was off for 2 weeks. I really could have gone back a little sooner. I will say I was very tired for a good 3 weeks.
Momof2inIowa 195 Posted July 29, 2014 Well I must be a huge slacker. I took 6 weeks off but let me explain...I was never in any pain but the time to adjust to the new foods is what I was worried about. I wanted to make sure that I was on solid foods again before returning to my desk job because I am a stress eater and I know that if I was sitting all day and not able to eat anything normal that I might jinx myself. I agree with prior posters, you are EXHAUSTED for a few weeks after the surgery and this is a time you need to take for you. I don't feel bad about taking off 6 weeks, every day I got a little better and once I got back to work I was ready to dive in with my new ME!! What you feel is right is right. Take the time for you. 1 Miss Mac reacted to this

tiredmama 138 Posted July 29, 2014 I took 2 weeks and in retrospect should have planned to only work half-days for my first week back- jumping right back in to full time (high stress job) was tough!
McButterpants 2,846 Posted July 29, 2014 I telecommute full time - I had surgery on Thursday and worked 1/2 days the following week. If I had to get up, get dressed and go to a job, I would have taken 2 weeks off. Even though I had no complications and my recovery was seemless, I got tired very quickly - I needed to rest and nap. If you don't have a desk job, I would suggest taking 2 full weeks off if you can...You need to make sure you take care of yourself! 1 Miss Mac reacted to this
MyKidsMom89 70 Posted July 29, 2014 What compounds this for me is that I am a food Service Director, so I'm around food ALL day long~ARGH! I think my team will be supportive of my fatigue-I'm going to say I had an appendectomy, since it's no one's business-but I will be super frustrated at my limitations (no lifting, etc.) I'm hoping I can pace myself yet still get back to work fairly quickly. Can you say Oxymoron?!?!

I'm going back to work on 18 August! Gosh people in the organisation must think that I have cancer or something . ><'
Steph W-O 75 Posted August 1, 2014 I had surgery on Wednesday and was back at work on Monday. I was tired easily but got by ok. I do have a desk job. I think it's hard to know ahead of time-people have such a variety of recovery times!
crazzeescrapper 125 Posted August 1, 2014 Had surgery last Thursday and feel like I could have gone back on Wednesday. Doctor said I need to take two weeks, but I'm hoping I can go back next Tuesday. Have my follow up appt on Monday. Getting bored at home!
Cairobat 52 Posted August 1, 2014 I was told to take two weeks off, but I went back to work 75% time one week after surgery. My job was very accomodating and put me on light duty. I work in receiving and lifting is a big part of the job. If they had not been accomodating I would have had to take a month off. Even working only 75% makes me pretty tired, though.
