Hello All, I have my very first appt on Aug 21 with the NJ Bariatric center. I already attended the seminar last week. But what should I expect the first appt? Is it going to be like a physical or pretty much a consultation?

I just had my first visit yesterday and all he did was checked my weight, my heart asked me a few questions and said he thinks I would benefit from the surgery

My 1st appointment was all about the paperwork. I felt like I was writing a novel - from all the forms I had to fill out. Everything from my health history and lifestyle to consent allowing my doc to use my picture as promotional materials (I slipped that page into my pocket - no one ever asked me about it. :-) )

Then it was an interview with the doc and he explained everything I needed to accomplish before surgery - insurance approval, blood tests, xrays, stomach scoping, psych evaluation. It took about 2 hours to get through everything.

I was weighed and they took my blood pressure.

With my first apt.they did height, weight. Then into another room with NUT and RN, they talked about what I ate and habits I needed to break. Onto my medication lists and problems I have, sleep apnea, copd ect... Saw the surgeon I was terrified! lol. But he talked nice explained what we were doing and asked if I had questions. I also got the 6 month PCP nut appointments and what I have to go through like psychiatrist and cardio and more.

Really wasn't bad but I was there good 2 hours. Go be happy and learn all you can.

I figured there would be lots of paperwork, but my Dr.s office is emailing them to me to have already filled out.

Are they usually aware of the insurance requirements before the first visit? Because they have all my ins info, just wondering if they check before I get there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
