For the sleevers out there......

What is your Dr's stance on taking anti inflammatory meds like ibuprofin, Aleve, etc?

I'd like to know this too. I didn't take ibuprofen for a month before or a month after surgery, because of the bleeding risks. I didn't get instructions to keep off them any longer than that, but also nothing about it being okay. I've taken ibuprofen maybe 10 times in the last 6 months. I don't think it's hurt me..

I really suggest you call your surgeon about this to get the correct answer.

Your surgeon is the best judge of this.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I spoke with my surgeon about a year and a half ago (1 year post op) and he advised me to not take them. My nutritionist said with the sleeve, it's not something I have to absolutely avoid, just try to limit it to when I really need it and take with some food. He said my Dr was thinking I was a bypass patient. Which led to other issues and me not being in contact with them since and not speaking with them any longer. I should've provided that info on my original post.....sorry about that. Anyway, not that I need to take them often, but if I do, just curious as to if they would really lead to dire problems.

Mine said not to unless I didn't have any other choice - and then only after 3 mos.

At first I was told no anti inflammatories for life. Two weeks after surgery and gout struck which is a side effect. At that point I was told anti inflamitories were ok. I could take as many and as long as needed. That was 6 weeks ago and I still take anti inflamitories daily for gout. The docs and staff say lots of things and the story changes depending who one talks with. If you need them take them. I havent had an issue.

Thanks for the input. It seems some of us get conflicting information or varying at the least. Seems like it can cause problems, but if someone has some more serious issues, perhaps it's worth it to take if absolutely necessary. Kind of a "risk vs reward" thing perhaps.

I agree with what you say. Somewhere I read that the most likely cause of death from the sleeve after one year out is from ulcers. However, it isn't clear to me how high that risk actually is.

I just went to a seminar last week and asked that question and dr. said if you MUST take it..take it with a prevacid or pepcid!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
