Rode a Century on Saturday

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I haven't been posting much here, I've been crazy busy. I just wanted to check in. I've been riding my bike a lot for exercise. On Saturday, I rode my first century. It was 104 miles and about 4,000 feet of elevation gain. I was pretty proud of myself! Before the surgery, I had trouble riding 10 miles. So far this year I've ridden almost 1200 miles and have a goal of 2000 by the end of the riding season.

None of this would have been possible without my sleeve. It has taken a lot of dedication to put in the miles on the bike, but the sleeve sure helped!

My biggest issue with the century was getting adequate food and hydration during the ride. According to Strava I burned about 4,500 calories during the ride. It was 6.5 hours of actual pedal time. But I was able to do it. Next year I am going to do the Seattle to Portland ride (203 miles in 2 days). So don't think they because you are sleeved you can't do endurance sports because I'm here to tell you that you can!

For anyone interested, I was sleeved in March 2013. My high was 360 and I'm now at 232. My diabetes is gone. High blood pressure is gone. sleep apnea is gone. Cholesterol went from elevated to normal. And I feel amazing.

That's incredible! I am in awe!!!

I just did my first triathalon this weekend (sprint distance only) and the 15 mile bike ride kicked my butt plenty...104 miles, you are a beast!!!

I totally get what you are saying about fueling and hydration--that's difficult with a sleeve. Would love to hear how you are doing it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
