Weird side effect from surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on Friday (7/25) and so far seem to be healing really well! However, I have a really strange side effect/symptom from surgery. On my right hip there is an area on the outer hip/pelvis section that is completely numb. I have no feeling, except for at night I sometimes get some nerve pain hot flashes to the area. I called and talked to my surgeons nurse who talked with my surgeon who both seemed rather baffled and had no idea what it could be. I'm relieved to find it's nothing serious, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this?

it may not be surgery related at all. it's time to see your pcp. anything that has gone numb is not normal.

How easy is it for you to lay flat on your back on the hard floor???

Try it for a few hours straight.

Can do funny things to your spine, vertebrae, possibly pinching nerves,...

Two things come to mind when I read this.

First ... what kind of anesthesia did you have? Did they do a spinal block?

Second .. have you considered seeing a chiropractor? Maybe you have a pinched nerve.

My knee area is numb, right side. My Dr said its because during the surgery they stand you up. This can cause issues with some of the nerves in that area. Dont know if that's your issue, but maybe??

I'll ask my surgeon about this in the morning and will try to post the answer before they put me under.

I asked about this today. Apparently they tilt the bed to prevent clotting, and at times you are almost standing up.

I'm going back to bed now because I hurt.

I got the band on 7/16. The worse side effect was a few days post op I was super itchy on the incisions. I had to dig into my willpower not to scratch. But oh were they itchy :0

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
