Pre-op liquid diet ... I want to cheat so bad!

Recommended Posts

I feel like such a baby! My pre-op liquids diet is only 3 days. My surgery is on Thursday, but today's hunger has been brutal! I've had 5 servings of Protein Shake, probably 100 oz of Water, some sugar free pudding and unsweetened apple sauce and I'm still thinking about nothing but food. Was it this hard for anyone else? The reasonable part of my knows it's only a few days, but the life-long eater in me wants to go cheat and cross my fingers that it's not a big deal! Anybody have any tips for dealing with the hunger?

Yes, it's hard. It stinks. You just gotta gut it out. Think about the game plan.

Sean,

I feel the same way. My surgery is on this Wednesday morning. I have been on a liquid diet for a week and it has been a bummer!! Lucky you..at least you had applesauce, etc.

I had to remain "busy" to keep my mind (stomach) off of food. By the time I looked up it was time for my next meal.

Hang in there you can do it!!

Hey Sean,

I was surprised at myself...I completed the liquid diet!! And you can too! Was not easy, but CAN be accomplished.

Well, in just about 4 hours from now, I will be rolling into surgery!!

Send a quick prayer up for me..we are all on this journey together.

I will check in with you soon!!

Best wishes!

I've managed to get by and not cheat! There were a lot of opportunities I had to sneak something in, but I decided if I can't even make it 3 days, how am I going to make it a lifelong change? It's tough, but I know why I'm doing this and I want to do it right. I've had some monstrous headaches (possibly due to caffeine elimination) and a big lack of energy as well. Surgery is tomorrow though, so I'm almost there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
