Hello lucky! I saw on another board that you are having (or maybe already had) your surgery through Duke. I too am going through Duke (after starting with Bariatric Specialists of NC-but due to insurance requirement I had to switch to Duke). Who was your surgeon and how did everything go?

I am doing my 6 month visit at BSNC on Oct 17th (still seeing them for the weight/bmi checks) and then sending off my last forms to Duke so they can submit for insurance approval. How did that approval process go for you? I'm so nervous b/c I had to switch surgeons 5 months into it, and I feel like something will be left out since technically I'm a new patient to Duke and I'm just like "hey schedule a surgery for me!" lol

Lucky2014, did you get approved? I also have the 80/20 teachers and state employees bcbs. I haven't been for my first appt yet which is 11/17. Just wondering what you have had to go through and why you had to appeal? I do know the 6 mon supervised diet is no longer needed. I have the surgeon, dietician and psych evaluation appts set up. Just trying to get an idea of how many appts you had before the papers were sent to bcbs. Although I know each doctor is different. I already meet the requirements for bcbs as far as weight and bmi. Thanks for any info you can give me to help me out.

So is your bmi under 40? Mine is 43 and the policy states if it's between 35 and 40 is when you need another reason such as diabetes or hbp. I know it's frustrating, I'm dreading that part of the whole thing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
