Lapbanders - No Bread Tolerance and Communion?

Recommended Posts

For those lapbanders who can't tolerate bread and participated in communion pre-op, do you take communion anyway, post-op? Gluten-free option? Wine/juice only? If so, do you have issues with such a small amount of bread? I am not at the stage in which I can test my bread tolerance, but wondered what people are doing. Today, I just had wine.

I'm only 11 days post-op, so I don't know from first hand experience, but I do have a suggestion. Does your church ever do the wafers instead of a loaf of bread? Could you get those instead?

Thanks for you responses, red and Hot.

Our church doesn't use wafers, but good ol' fashioned bread (King Hawaiian, to be exact!), but we do have gluten free bread that looks like it may be more cracker material than bread.

How about bringing some Melba Toast in and ask your pastor to give you a piece of that, rather than soft, squishy bread? Melba Toast tastes okay and it breaks down completely in your mouth so that you are practically swallowing nothing. :)

How much are you getting for communion?

You need to lighten up...there will be bigger and more important issues....

Just saying....

Thanks, Icy. I am not even sure if I will have an issue, but just in case, the melba toast is a great idea.

To answer your question, the size of the bread is about 3 croutons. They have big pieces. What can I say?

Because most posts on here talk about lapbanders foaming at the mouth and have serious effects when they eat bread (you included), any amount of bread, I asked this legitimate question. As stated, I don't know if I will have an issue because I am not far along enough to be able to "test" bread.

I have only been part of this community for a couple of weeks and it has been extremely helpful to me and seemingly a very supportive environment. When there were few responses, I assumed that maybe there weren't many people on this site who take communion or that, in fact, communion bread wasn't much of a problem.

However, I find your response to be very discounting and almost shaming me that I would be concerned about communion and dare ask the community this question (my very first question, by the way) because I should lighten up. I was surprised, quite frankly, because you seem so helpful to others. I was actually going to ignore it until you arrogantly told ME that [something, not sure what] should be more important than my faith...neither your place nor an opinion asked for.

This topic was dormant for a couple of days and I was okay with not having responses from people who take communion (altered or not), but from those above who were trying to help problem-solve in the event I have an issue (thanks again).

Since you were not trying to be helpful, I wish you would not have even responded.

I have never had an issue with bread. Don't eat before church and I bet the small amount of bread will be tolerated. Does priest put host on your tongue or place it in your hand? If it is placed in hand then you could break off a small piece and place it in your mouth.

Hi ElectricBoogaloo,

I am also a Christian and take communion. Was wondering about this as I'm to be banded next week. We pass around a small tray w/tiny pieces of bread and then another tray w/juice. My thought is to put the tiniest piece of bread in your mouth then sip the juice (or wine) and hopefully it would soften the bread enough to slide down easily. Don't know if it works or not as I haven't tried it yet. But hey, thanks for asking the question as I was also wondering about bread and communion.

Best of luck on your weight loss journey!

I can see why that would upset you. I was taken aback by the comment as well..no one should ever be made to feel as if their question is stupid. I think its a perfectly logical question. Please Dont let one rude comments bother you. Maybe it wasn't meant to sound so rude. At any rate, please feel comfortable asking any questions you may have. A lot of supportive people here. Good luck and God bless you!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
