Surgery Cancellation

Recommended Posts

Was wondering has anyone ever had their surgery cancelled because they didn't loose the weight the doctor wanted?

I have heard of at least 2 and possibly 3 that were told you could lose weight or stay the same but if you gained weight, then it was off. These are people on the 3-12 months diet for the insurance. I think they'd let slide a couple of pounds because any one can have that and differences of clothes and shoes and Water would make that but a 10 pound or so difference, nope.

My first cancellation was due to an emergency...I lost 27 lbs. The second time I went to get the surgery I only lost 1 oz. It was close they were not sure if he was going to do it but he said a loss is a loss and I was scheduled.

I always wonder though if he had cancelled on me and then rescheduled would my number have come up for so many complications.....I do wonder that sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I went for my information session I was told I didn't have to lose weight, but I absolutely could not gain weight. They said it's because it's getting harder and harder to get insurances to approve surgeries if you gained weight during your pre-op program.

Well I didn't gain weight I did lose weight. When I went in for a weigh in on Friday my patient advocate told me I only lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks of starting the pre-op liquid diet. I followed the diet to the letter I felt so discouraged. She said she would have to send the doctor an email and if I didn't hear from her by that afternoon then report to the hospital @ the time given once the nurse called. We will see what happens tomorrow once I get to the hospital.

Just go there & we'll see tomorrow after you get there?! Doesn't seem like a considerate or businesslike way to treat anybody.

Having said that, I hope everything works out for you tomorrow.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
