I have been on another WLS forum and I posted about how much I exercise. I go the gym 6 days a week. If I use the treadmill I walk for 30 to 60 minutes at a fairly good pace to get my heart rate up. Basically power walking. If I use the bike I generally ride about 10 miles in about 50 minutes. I do have some resistance on the bike. I know that I am just over a month out of surgery and the surgeon said to exercise 5 days a week for 30 to 60 minutes. Some days I can do an hour on the treadmill, some days I just do a half hour. Anyway, some of the people on the other forum attacked me today, saying I exercise to much and that I will not lose weight like I should because of the amount of exercise I get. They were even nice enough to tell me to seek psychiatric help because I have a transfer addiction to exercise. I know I should listen to only what my doctor says, but they really made feel like crap. Am I exercising to much? I just want some opinions. I'm not going to stop, for the first I my life I am able to be active and I love it. Somehow I managed to gain 8 pounds when I started soft foods, then I stalled for two weeks. I have lost about 12 pounds in the last 5 days. Unfortunately, my monthly friend has come and my weight loss has slowed, but I expect that. Anyway, thanks ahead of time for a opinions or replies.

I disagree with the people attacking you!

You should do what your Dr says and what your body feels good enough to do! I can only hope and pray I feel well enough to do all that! (and that is what my Dr and nutritionist say is the correct amount of exercise as well!) Great job! And I wish you great success in your journey!

I know my doctors recommend 30 minutes of exercise 4-5 days a week. And you should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising, don't get winded. They say if you over exercise it can slow your weight loss.

I'm not winded or anything like that. Sometimes I even talk on the phone. I only walk fast enough to bring my heart rate up in an acceptable range. Most of the time if I use the bike I can't get my heart rate up because I have to add a lot of resistance or put the bike on one of the workouts programmed into it. I'm not in there training for an Iron man triathlon or anything like that. I just chose to go six days instead of five. My doctor told me to get hot, sweaty, and bring my heart rate up. That's exactly what I am doing.

Wow. That's too bad they attacked you like that. Doing an hour 6 days a week is not too much. Follow your doctor's instructions like you have been doing. Keep it up! Sounds like you are doing great.

Hi I am sorry that you felt that you were attack on another forum, as long as your no hurting yourself and your doctor approves I say push onward. I am currently looking into gyms now at Fitness USA as well as looking into buying a treadmill I walk at least three times per week and i am now looking into riding a bike which I have not done in years. Congrats on your new passion and keep us posted.

If I couldn't exercise I would go stir crazy! I run 3.1 miles at least 2 to 3 times a week, spin classes, and I do strength training (trying to tighten that skin some). If you don't exercise at all, everything you lose will turn to flab, and you want muscle. Muscle burns way more calories at rest than excess skin. You're doing great by exercising 6 days a week. Just make sure to listen to your body. When it says I'm tired, then take a break. Don't listen to those nay sayers! You're doing awesome!

I think the biggest issue is being cleared by your doctor. And you are. Prior to bypass I had a band as well as removal and was working out a couple hours a day. As long as you're cleared medically it's good. I can't wait to get back to working out but with complications I don't expect it too soon. Tuesday will be 3 wks post op for me and I'm still on liquids.

My only advice to you is to stay hydrated and get in your Protein. And ask when you can add weights.

Thanks for all your replies, I am feeling so much better now. I just don't understand why people would act like that. I wasn't bragging or anything I was just stating how much I love to exercise now. I am going to talk to the surgeon about adding some weights into my workout at my next appointment on August 18. I need to do something about my arms they are not anywhere close to being toned, but my legs are looking great. Thanks again for replying.

Jtickle you are an inspiration! I'm two weeks post op and am just starting to go on daily walks but hope to return to the gym soon. I hope I'm able to exercise as well as you have been! Great job!

Just start out slow so you don't over exert yourself, build up you stamina. You can do it!!!!

jtickle, at my first appointment at the Bariatric clinic I was given my patient manual with both pre and post op instructions. Before surgery I'm to work up to one hour of exercise a day seven days a week. Post-op, by the end of my first week, I'm supposed to be taking several short walks a day, totaling 60 minutes, seven days a week. So, I say,as long as your Dr has no problems with it and you're feeling good, more power to you!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
