Protein Drinks...good and bad

Recommended Posts

I know there are a gazillion Protein Drinks, shakes and powders out there. I also know everyone's taste is different....however, there are a lot of products that are just plain yucky to a LOT of people, and also some that are either NOT BAD or pretty good to many folks. Can you give me some feedback on the good, bad and the ugly on this? Thanks!

I have found the ESA or EAS brand can't remember what order they go in, at Wal-Mart to be pretty good. They come in vanilla or chocolate. They are easy to get down and not chaulky at all. I personally am going to be sticking to the Herbalife shakes. Thats the shake I used to get down from 266 to 247. They are great and come in like 6 different flavors. French Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Wild berry, Pina Coloda, Tropical fruit, & Cookies N Cream. I had my sister try a couple of them and she really likes the Cookies one. I personally like the Wild Berry and French Vanilla. Now, you can only get them thru a distributor or Ebay that I have found. I liked them so much I started selling them. As of right now, I am taking a break from selling them, but if you want more information, send me a private message and I will get back to you. I don't like to push the fact that I am selling them on here because people like different things, this is just what works for me and may not work for you. Some people say they suck. Which is cool, to each is own. I will tell you this too, usually you will find them cheaper on Ebay and its probably stupid of my saying that, but just check it out. Hope this helps and take care.

I absolutely love Atkins. I buy Vanilla and strawberry. They also have two types of chocolate and a caramel dulce leche..I think. Anyway, I get them from Walmart or BJ's - much cheaper than the drug stores.

I read that a lot of people like MATRIX. However, I don't like it but it does have more Protein than what I drink.

I've also read a lot about unjury. I ordered samples but I'm scared to try it because it I keep thinking that it will have that gritty texture that some powder drinks have.

One more thing...I've also read a lot about Isopure but people say its too sweet. I think I will try though.

I love the Atkins shakes in ready-to-go cans.

I also ordered the "variety trial" pack from bariatriceating.com, which contains a lot of different products & brands of Proteins. It's a nice way to try a lot of things w/out having to buy a case of something. The low carb chai tea made w/the micellar milk was a nice treat the other day.

I also ordered samples of the unjury powder, as it is recommended by my doc. I mixed the unflavored into a 60-cal Jello pudding and it was fine -- I didn't notice the taste of the powder at all (altho the mixing did make the Jello more of a runny, drinkable consistency... i guess I could've put it back in the frig to harden up a bit if I'd had the time).

I also went to GNC & bought 1 each of the Isopure zero carb drinks, again to try them for my liquid stage.

I guess I'm just a "trier"! :) At least this way I'll know what I like & what I don't when I get to my 2-week pre- and 2-week post-op periods!

Good luck!

there is a great product called "Boost Glucose Control"...its meant for diabetics but the nutritionist here said it is excellent for gastric patients. It has 16 grams of protien in it...good stuff. You can buy it at Walgreens, CVS,etc. but you may have to ask them to order it for you. I work as a director of food service and usually I work for 14-16 hours, and I have found that pre-surgery, this is the only product that gets me through the day. I drink it around 7 am or so and I am good for about 5 hours.

THere is a really good one called Carb Solutions. I got mine at Albertsons. They have 110 caloried and 21 g Protein. That is alot and they TASTE SO GOOD...I tried the EAS and I think they are soooo gross...although I only tried the strawberry kind and not the chocolate kind. I also got some of the Isopure drinks and I go the grape frost or something like that...It was fine for about 5 minutes..and then all of a sudden it seemed like I could taste the whey. I dont know...maybe it was because I was thinking about it...Deanna

I have only liked chocolate and vanilla Unjury so far. Especially the chocolate. I mix it with skim milk in my bullet blender and it comes out very smooth and yummy. Sometimes I add fruit or a touch of cinnamon, or even Fiber powder. I the strawberry unjury didn't taste "natural' enough for me though. I have pretty much gagged on any other Protein Powder shakes I've tasted. The only thing is the fact that you have to order it off the internet and it seems to take a couple of weeks for it to arrive which is annoying when I forget to re-order in time to have my morning shake.< /p>

I am IN LUV with EAS myoplex lite shakes - i heavily prefer the packets that i mix in the blender with Water and ice - you can make them super thick or thin - i find them soooo good and filling. they only have 180 calories and 25 grams of Protein and 19 carb - so a good mix for most of us trying to get protein in. I have had and use the premixed drinks - esp for travel - but i don't like them as much.

I too love the Myoplex lite shakes.. the carb sense ones are good too. An alternative to shakes are the IDS sports protein tubes. Only 3 ozs, 176 calories and 41 grams of protein! Great for on the go since they don't need to be refrigerated. I found them at Vitamin Shoppe.

My Dr's assistant just told me to start drinking three shakes a day to lose a little more weight before my final weigh on Wednesday. My surgeon will not do the surgery unless I've lost 15-20 lbs before hand. I've lost 12 and am STUCK...

Now here I am at work needing to go and find a decent premixed shake for lunch - any suggestions? I usually drink Avacare that I mix with Water but of course they are all at home :)

Thanks,

Crystal

Hi Crystal,

I love Muscle Milk Protein shakes in the chocolate and banana. They have 22g Protein and lots of Vitamins and minerals. I have gotten used to them and they are satisfying for now. They come in 17oz. RTD cartons or 11oz.(which I drink) 4-packs.

I recently got a 6lb bag of EAS chocolate, but haven't tried it yet because I am not sure how best to mix it. With Water or milk?

Good luck,

Judy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
