researching doing gastric bypass need advice for family

Recommended Posts

I have done all the yo - yo dieting over the past 20 tears I can stand. I lose a few pounds only to stall then gain it back plus some.

I'm trying to explain to my husband in a way he will understand. He is the most loving kind person but is so worried about this being too extreme!

Any suggestions?

  • Most surgeons have an information session where each of the procedures are reviewed and explained in great detail. I would suggest taking your husband to one of these meetings.
  • He can also research the different procedures online. There's a lot of good information on the web.
  • If your surgeon's office or local hospital has a support group for bariatric patients, this would be an excellent resource. You and your husband can actually talk to people who have had the different surgeries and hear their stories.

I know my husband was nervous about me having such a major surgery, but he was also incredibly supportive. I did my best to educate him about the different options, which helped alleviate his fears.

These boards are also very helpful. There are so many helpful people here. Good luck to you both. Keep us posted on your progress. :)

Thank you so much! I have signed up for an informational seminar. I've also printed information out for him.

He told me yesterday that a guys wife he works with had the surgery and did poorly the had a baby and gained it all back. That didn't help my discussions with him.

I do have concerns regarding regain after the first several years. Is it common?

My fear is 2 fold: I have 100 lbs to lose and I 1. Won't be able to get close to losing that much and 2. Regain down the road!

Jenna

I have about 100 pounds to lose as well. Im super excited though :) I've done my hw and feel great about my surgeon and the hospital and all the after care available for free afterwards (visits to the bariatric nurse at no charge, free support groups initiated by the bariatric program). Its also a baratric center of excellence and makes me feel good about the stringent requirements by the surgeons and hospital.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
