Intro and question...Rules

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am new...very excited to have found this site. It took me about a year to decide on getting the lap-band, but now I just want to get it done! I am a 33 year old houswife with three lovely kids and an absolutely FABULOUS husband who tells me I am beautiful even though I weight 289lbs. He's a Keeper!

I didn't have a weight problem until after I had my first child. I had post partum depression really bad, added to it that we moved away from my family (which I am really close to) and we only had one car which my husband took to work and left me stranded all day with a baby...alone, and mix it all together....major depression. So I ate to comfort myself. In 10 years I went from weighing 135lbs to 289lbs. In these 10 years I have tried almost everything and finally this last year I hit bottom and gave up. I can't do it on my own. I needed a patch to quit smoking, I don't know why it too me so long to realize that that is kind of what the Lap band is like. A tool to take the edge off one part of the problem so I can deal with the emotional part of it. I am rambling...sorry.

I have my initial visit with Dr. Shrikanth in Federal Way, Wa. on Monday. I am really excited. I also scheduled all of my other necessary appointments today...I am one of those people who take a long time to decide, and then when I do, I am really quick about getting it done and wishing it could go faster.:) Anway...people keep mentioning "rules" but I can't find them. Could someone give them to me? Sorry for the long post. I am glad to have found this site!

Welcome Careypea, you've come to the right place. Most of your questions will be answered if you go to the FAQ area of this site. It helped me alot. I still haven't found the rules, I just try to follow the lead of the vetern bandsters.

My DH (dear husband) used to tell me I was beautiful too. I knew better. I was 160 when he married me and 3 years I thought pregnancy was a license to eat. It got progressively worse for the next 17 yrs. I was so psyched when I got my surgery date that I started (only 2 wks prior) working out, drinking lots of Water and cutting down on sweets. It made resuming these healthy choices easier to resume after surgury. Make sure your pantry is full of the things you will need after surgery-Before surgery. Keep reading . Knowledge is powerful.

sorry, I guess I could have made that more clear. I meant the lap band rules, not the website rules :)

Thanks so much!

guns n roses (Love your name!) I am a month out, but I am so geared up I am going to start walking and cutting back on sugar, etc. on monday. This weekend is my last hoorah! I don't want to slip into the "Last meal" mentality. I want to get a running start at my weightloss! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
