Pre op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I started my liquid diet today, my surgery is in 2 weeks. I am only allowed 4 slimfast shakes a day made with skimmed milk. I am allowed Water and zero sugar soft drinks, but I had 2 cups of 10 calorie herbal tea today. I'm really struggling. no idea how I will get through 13 more days. My stomach is aching and the cravings are so intense I could cry. Really hoping it gets easier in a few days as my stomach and liver start to shrink.

I started my all liquid diet yesterday. I can have no more than 10g of fat and 30g of carbs. I must also take in at least 70g of Protein. I also need to aim for 900 calories. I use unsweetened cashew or almond milk and Inspire protein powders. The Peanut Butter Cup is my favorite so far. I can have unlimited broth and crystal lite. I made Popsicles using crystal lite. I work at school and am fine so far, I am just so busy at work to think about eating.

My surgery date is August 26. I'm having gastric bypass. I lost 26 lbs by changing my diet in the last 3 months. Today I started the liquid diet. My stomach was very upset this morning. I had a Premier Protein shake for Breakfast and felt horrible. Maybe it's mental because I consumed those for Breakfast sometimes before today. For lunch today I had a chicken Soup unjury shake with 1% milk, which tasted like chicken broth. I'm also drinking Water, as much as I want. I figure that may make me feel fuller during the day.

I'm on a full liquid diet for two weeks, which includes pudding and yogurt, but most items are sweet, not savory so I'm feeling a bit urpy and hungry. I think a lot of the hunger can be attributed to the reason why I'm overweight, which is that I just like to eat......anything. I'm totally addicted to food. I'm a Midwestern gal and love my food!

The doctor told me that my taste buds may change after surgery and I will probably not crave the things I crave now. I sure hope he's right, but just in case, I have scheduled an appointment with a psychologist to help me with my addiction and relationship with food.< /p>

I sure hope I can stick to this liquid diet!

Sunshine 3073 Keep your eyes on the prize and will get through these 14 days. Being allowed full liquid will help as well. There are lots of things you can add to your shakes to make them less boring. You could try unflavored Protein and add veggies, cottage cheese and some savory flavorings to it....tomato juice can be mixed with protein powder! Good luck.

Thank you Mountaingal. I'm really struggling! I wanted to stop for a Culver's double cheeseburger after work. It was all I could do not to! I came home and made some Idahoan mashed potatoes with skim milk instead of Water and made them thin enough to drink. It helped.

I asked my husband if he would make dinner for him and our son before I get home from work while I'm on the liquid diet, which he didn't do. Then he told me about how on the Today show this morning how they had a couple who used My Fitness Pal to lose over 100 lbs. Duh, that's how I lost the 26 lbs! Oh and THANKS for not making your dinner before I got home at 5:45 pm! We TALKED ABOUT THIS! I don't think they want me to get the surgery and are trying to undermine my goal. That infuriates me that I really don't have the support I need. I'm doing this for ME. I need support from my family. Not cool!

I thought I'd planned well for this day to start the liquid diet, but seems I didn't. We're going to the grocery store in just a bit to find more items that I can consume throughout the day.

I was told the first few days are the hardest and if today is any indication, I believe it!

The liquid diet is the last thing I need to do not only in order to have the surgery, but to prove to myself I can do it, that I DO have the willpower and can overcome this challenge.

I'm currently on day 10 of my pre-op diet and day 3 of liquids only(first 7days were 2 shakes and a 4oz high Protein meat with 3 handfuls of low carb veggies). I won't lie, it's been tough! I think my sense of smell is heightened or it may be all in my head. But I have to remove myself from the vicinity of anyone eating because it's really hard and I won't even mention food commercials. But to everyone...stay focused and take it one meal/shake at a time! My surgery is in 5 days so I can't slip up now!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
