do pain meds not work on you too?

Recommended Posts

I know I can't be the ONLY person that most pain meds don't work on, right????

The only pain med that works on me is demerol. Morphine doesn't work, diludad doesn't work, acetometophen doesn't work, tramadol doesn't work, neither does fentanyl, can't take hydrocodone, ibuprofen works but can't take it anymore.

My bariatric surgeon refused to script me the demerol making one lame excuse after another. (I only wanted it while in the hospital. After, in pill form, would be nice too but I usually just suffer through the pain). It was neglect on his part and the nurses agree. Took them 9 hrs after surgery to get a hold of him to try another pain med that of course also didn't work. Poor nurses felt so helpless as I was crying in pain and calling my dr all sort of not so nice names. They were awesome. I'm thankful for that. Otherwise I felt like just a number and a paycheck to my dr. After I chewed him out the next morning he left my room w/o even telling me how my surgery went, if my hiatal hernia was fixed, nothing. Not even the day of discharge did he go over anything with me except when I asked him if the huge dimple of an incision was going to go away (yes, and it is). I forgot to ask about the hernia but was left a bit surprised he didn't talk about my surgery. I walked into my husband's room while he was finishing in there talking to him. And I was pleasant with him even. Not even any acknowledgement that I was up and walking and seemed to be doing well.

So now I'm getting calls from the hospital and our insurance co. for follow up and survey on how my care was and I tell them all this. I feel badly for giving him a negative review, because he is one of the top bariatric surgeons in Texas, but that's the way I feel. I will go to the follow up appt with him next week and see how he treats me, otherwise I hope I'll be able to change bariatric drs.

I can't take NSAIDS, morphine or dialaudid due to allergies. I was on demoral and tordol in the hospital. I came home on percocet (bad nightmares) so was switched to tylanol #3 which I can tolerate.

I dont see why your dr would take an issue with it. My dialudid allergy (crazy rash that was horrible) happened during my bypass stay so they took me off it and switched me to demoral. I had it once via iv ( hit me really fast) then after that intramuscularly(which seemed better).

I've had tramadol before for torn ligaments In my wrist and herniated discs in my back. It doesn't work so I just refuse it and use ice packs instead. It was effective but because I had to stay on it so long it stopped working.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
