Recommendations for a better tasting protein supplement?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm four weeks out from surgery and have been trying different Protein Shakes in anticipation of the pre-op diet, but they are all sickly sweet and leave me nauseated  for hours after I drink just one. How on earth am I going to drink three in one day when I can't even stomach just ONE  ???

Does anybody here have suggestions for alternatives that are okay for the pre-op diet? Are the Protein waters any good? Can the Protein Shots substitute for the shakes?

I'm just really not looking forward to having that nauseous feeling all day for two weeks before surgery, then after as well...

Ideas???? :D

Protein shots are not great for you, and they taste disgusting. My two favorites were the EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control shakes (I got mine at Target) or Chocolite from netrition.com. Neither of them are too sweet, at least not to me.

The other option is to buy an unflavored Protein powder, like Isopure, that you can mix with pretty much anything like tea, Soup, put it in jell-o or puddings, etc. I do not recommend the flavor of a lot of the 'protein waters' floating around. They're also pretty sweet. If you don't want something too sweet, try mixing the unflavored Protein Powder with diet cranberry juice or some other low sugar juice, milk, or pretty much anything else.

So far, I've tried a few (I'm I've a month pre op), an my favorite was Unjury powder. You have to order it online, but they have multiple different flavored and even have an unflavored one.

You might want to try Protein Soups instead of powders. You can buy them at several online stores - here is a link to Nashua Nutrition's protein soups. I liked the HealthSmart brand. If you do try them, I would recommend starting with a variety box (or two) and holding off ordering boxes of one flavor until you have sampled something after surgery and decided you like it with your new, post-surgery taste buds.

Also, you don't say exactly which brands/flavors you have been trying - I found that Unjury, Jay Robb, and Designer whey seemed less sweet to me than some of the other brands. Good luck!

So far I've tried EAS vanilla and Dark chocolate, and Muscle Milk Light in banana and chocolate, and the only thing even remotely appetizing is the chocolate flavors, but they all leave me feeling nauseous for several hours afterward.

My next test will be the waters and soups....

Thanks everyone for your recommendations!!!

I used the Unjury Protein Soup and shakes. First I ordered the sample pack to see what I liked!

Many people like premiere ready to drink.

Others really like Syntrax Nectars (lighter fruitier flavors and iced tea).

Isopure is another very different one (clear, fruity)

I can only " stomach" Syntrax matrix.

Keep experimenting. We all went thru believing we would never finding one we liked!

Jay Robb is very suttle in it's flavors and you can mix it well(blends well with just a blender bottle) with sugar free puddings and flavorings. I get it at Whole Foods, but you can rder it online too. The Unury brand isn't bad either.

I must be the odd ball here, I can't stand the Unjury brand. Ordered the sample pack and tried the chicken Soup, strawberry, vanilla and mixed unflavored with crystal lite. There is a smell to all of them that makes me want to gag.

I feel the same about Unjury...that is the whey smell and I have trouble with a lot of them for that smell/aftertaste. It's why I do a blend shake rather than pure whey typically--Syntrax Matrix is my go to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
