protonix and applesuce/juice

Recommended Posts

How am I supposed to take the protonix granules if I'm not supposed to have the sugar that's in the apple juice? ?? So first I was afraid to take the Omaprozole capsule because it seemed too big and it did go down uncomfortably and now I'm afraid to take the protonix because of the sugar in the apple juice. I have sugar free apple sauce but worried about that hurting going down too. At the hospital the protonix was given via iv and they did give me apple juice and I drank one with no problem (i did dry heave that night though. Don't know what that was from) but the home "rules" from dr is we aren't supposed to have any juice.

This sucks.

Im sorry I dont have any experience ywt with pill taking after surgery. Are you able to check with a pharmacist on any liquid forms or crushable forms, or possibly caplets you can open and sprinkle in something?

I (personally) don't drink fruit juice anymore at all, unless it's a very small (2-4 oz) unsweetened cranberry juice (not cocktail).

When I first came home, all medications were to be liquid or dumped/crushed/broken up into Protein shake, unflavored Protein (ala Soup, "pudding", etc.) or just with a great big "YUCK"! LOL! I most often just took a couple spoonfuls of Protein Shake (or ensure) and put the meds in it and swallowed it, then was able to enjoy the "regular" taste of the remainder without a medicine taste.

All juices were said to be too sugary and citrus, in particular, difficult on the stomach; the only thing I really miss is apple, grape and pineapple juices; of all things to give up, juice was not all that difficult for me.

Good Luck!

Right but the protonix have to be taken with apple juice or sauce for the ph balance for the protonix. I still haven't taken it. I'm scared.

I've taken Protonix for years and never been told it needed anything to adjust pH or that any juice was needed. I have always taken it with my morning coffee or at bedtime with plain Water. If you're still worried, the pharmacist would be a good source for information!

That's what it said on the script insert.

Mmmmmmm coffeeeeee.

I just took it with a tiny bit of applesauce. Let's hope there is no repercussion. Fingers crossed!

I'm on diluted apple juice (1/2 juice 1/2 wat) 2 weeks out. A very weird exception to the nirm. My dr wants me in it as dies the nut due to complications and nit getting in enough calories and nutrition. If you have a sip of juice you're not going to dump it has to dp with quantity of sugar over time. So it's safe to have with a med.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
